I'll buy that. I think it could also be argued that if average-looking or less attractive children get less attention, they get less opportunity to develop of repertoire of attachment-promoting social behaviors to compensate for the perceived deficits in their looks. If you're intelligent as well and so less likely to be quiet and obedient, it's often 'three strikes, you're out.'
