Jun. 12th, 2005 05:49 pmI'm back. To prove nothin ghas changed in the world while I was out cavorting in period costume, I sat next to an Elvis impersonator ont he way back from Connecticut and was just greete by a casing notice wanring that one of the characters requires "particle nudity." Ah.
The event itself was small, low-key, and regrettably, very very warm. I struggled with fencing much to my intense, and at times comical, frustration. Suffering, as usual, from being both left-handed and lacking in real strength in my arms. Despite a valiant effort, i just couldn't effectively use the practice weapons becaue of their weight and had to resort to wooden sticks and was weirdly persistant about the whole thing. Updside: Good time, good workout, origin of a ridiculous txt message to Kali. Downside: Still not king. The answer for me is aparently small sword.
The dancing was good and I feel like we learned a lot of new things. By the actually party portion of the evening I was pretty wiped out, and suffered from a dress that needed hemming far more than I had recalled, but was able to do many of the dances, including a very simple yet very funny (and fun) horse dance. My capacity to crack myself up in nearly any context is bottomless.
Anyway, I'm appalled at how exhausted I am, but we'll be doing it again next year in all probability, in a season more appropriate to the level of exertion and layers of wardrobe involved.

Date: 2005-06-12 11:33 pm (UTC)Being left handed is usually a very great boon. It makes you hard to teach, it also makes you hard to defend against.
Also, heat+period dress is why I drifted away from the SCA. All the styles I liked were in the northern half of Europe, but wool and coastal Texas do not mix, despite my adolescent exertions to the contrary.
