Also, in trivial matters, now that we have 1 million environmental refugees roaming about, can we uncancel Carnivale?

re: the latter story -- it's not just firefighters they're giving silly jobs to, they've got EMTs passing out 1-800-FEMA fliers, too. A friend of mine is an EMT from upstate NY, her crew has a ton of search and rescue experience from 9/11, and they all drove down there (sans her, as she's in med school now) expecting the same type of gig, but instead are passing out phone numbers to people who no longer have phones. I guess they're all really pissed.

No. The one you want to see is this:

FEMA has left international aid sitting on their thumbs as well according to a member of the Institute for Policy Studies:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/08/142233

This includes cuban doctors who deal with hurricanes all the time and swedes who were ready to set up water purification and cell phone systems.

I Hope..

It really does defy belief. It really does. This level of incompetence reeks of corruption. There'll always be one or two fuck ups in a logistical nightmare like this, but this many???

I know it's a different situation, a smaller population and all, but we also had an equally small population and fewer resources to deal with the situation:

Cyclone Tracy. Worth mentioning if for no other reason than our Prime Minister flew there as soon as he got the news and they got straight on to dealing with the public health and housing issues. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_tracy)

The first story might have been the worst story I've read from the disaster. I'm going to link to it because people need to see it.

Agreed. I had seen a part of it earlier, but only the first section about the buses that never came, when I saw the whole thing I flipped.
