I understand completely about interactions with one's life and one's characters. I remember a particularly vivid incident with a character of mine who was having a difficult time in his life at the time and who noticed a particular on-line argument on a mailing list I was on, he noticed it because the argument touched on very similar issues to the ones he was already upset about and so he became more upset, more unhappy and utterly determined to make peace in that on-line argument. When one's internal and external lives mix things can become simultaneously odd, wonderful, stressful, and difficult. Sleep well my friend.
