I just got a call for background work, said yes, started to get the information (ironically, it was where my gf teaches), and then they told me the pay rate, which was _below_ standard non-union wages, which are already pretty painful to work for.

So, I said, very politely, "I'm sorry I really can't do a whole day's work for less than standard non-union wage rates." They thanked me politely, and that was that.

Part of me is horrified that I did this, because what if this agency doesn't book me for work again, what if it slows down my ability to get that last waiver?

And part of me knows I was right and reasonable. Goddamn it, I want in the union so someone else can do my dirty work.

That's a totally normal thing to do. Remember agencies make their money when YOU make money-- so you not taking a low-paying gig still serves their intersts.

And from the other side- they don't have time to report people for that kind thing, cause do you have any idea how many people they're calling who are turning them down?

I'm sure you're not the only "um, NO" they got. You did the right thing; your time is worth what it's worth.
