I just realized you don't let people comment on your journal.
Anyway, before you return the R&J DVD, screw around with the extras -- there's a hysterical bit in there where Luhrmann explains the horror that was pitching the film to the studios, and it includes this mini test-film he did with DiCaprio that is... well, strangely compelling would be the best way to put it.
And yeah -- the trilogy business is about the style of film, not the precise plots really. Will not keep ranting as I've somewhere to be, but you have so hit on a pet subject.
Also, if you can find the New Yorker interview with Luhrmann (parts of it are floating around the web, but not all of it as far as I can tell), it's pretty fascinating.
And yeah, Leguizamo just rocks my world as Tybalt. Claire Danes _still_ annoys me though, although I get why it was fun to use her as a dress up doll.

What you should try to find, if you're really into Red Curtain Cinema is the bonus disk that's in the RCT box set -- there's hours and hours and hours of Luhrmann ranting about it -- but it's basically about presenting heightened realities where you are moved _because_ you know how the story ends from the beginning and because you never forget it's a story. Cool shit.
And Strictly is about the sweetest movie ever made, and I tend to loathe romantic comedies.
