further medical

I'm not sure why I keep cutting these entries. It's not gross anymore. But it is still boring, and I'm in some mental chaos about it all.

I've spoken with the doctor, and IBS seems very likely right now. Allergies, on their own or in combination, also have to be considerd though, especially since my mother's side of the family has a track record with sudden, late developing allergies, and my plant allergies did come upon me suddenly in my late-20s. My mother became violently allergic to shellfish at my age -- shrimp tempura anyone? The other late blooming family allergy? Dairy.

My head's in a pretty intense scramble about this whole thing, in large part because it feels like one of those "vague women's diseases" adventures, which is the type of thing that just ENRAGES me -- from medical research to medical care to biological fact to the utterly galling notion that something I'm not that attached to (my physical gender) might be why I can't fucking eat anything but rice!

I'm feeling very ranty.

There are a lot of good resources regarding IBS and its treatment online to justify the fact that it's not a 'girl thing' or worse, 'just in your head.'

I know a lot more men with IBS than women, possibly because women generally handle their stress in ways that don't include internalizing. *cough* I have IBS. I wonder if it's us 'mannish' women who get it. :p

When I was doing really badly, I ate a lot of rice noodles in miso soup. :p At my worst, I'll go on a fast and drink nothing but gingerbeer cut with a lot of water. :( You might find some value in using a juicer, I don't know. I'm sorr you're having to deal with all this.

Oh, I also took a supplement of bromelain and papain (very low dose) and an acidophilus blend supplement. It did help a great deal.

Apparently, many more women than men get IBS, but women usually have the variety that leans towards constipation. I can't yet decide if it's funny that I have the man's version of a woman's disease.

*laugh* Well, I have fibro, too, which I know is considering a woman's disease, down to a correlation with estrogen levels.

Oh, now that you know that this isn't a buggie. If you haven't tried Immodium, I would suggest that you do, just one dose. Be very sparing with your eating, too, because you could get false comfort from it. However, it is very effective; it's like valium for your cilia (literally). It can be a big help. I know runners who use it because long runs can cause cramping and irritation, too.

I am glad you're getting closer to a diagnosis at least. Gah. Today's word is "gah."

I don't know enough about your heritage to say, but there are lots of allergies and intolerances specific to certain ethnicities rather than gender, and it would make sense that a maturing body would grow more into some of these after the willy-nilly acceptance of childhood and the 20s. I am currently blaming my dairy thing on my father's Spanish blood - it turns out neither of us tolerate it well, mosquitos eat us alive while ignoring the rest of the family, etc. etc. Not very scientific but it makes me feel better (and distances me conveniently from my mother's frighteningly limiting microscopic colitis).

I mean, I'm down with the gendered thing, but there's no reason you should be.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least they don't think it's Crohn's which is a possibility from an ethnic heritage point of view.

[identity profile] schpahky.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Crohn's: way, WAY worse than IBS.

I know, I auditioned for a commercial about it!

IT's actually fairly common for weird food allergies to appear in the 30s. Unfortunately.

Another source for lactose intolerance is is you're born premature. (Which is also connected to having a poor immune system and other health crap.) I have no genetic source for lactose intolerance whatsoever, but I was a bit preemie - and apparently the lactose digestion enzyme is one of the last to form in the stomach, and is one of the most sensitive. (A friend of mine dropped dead of a heart attack, and was revived - but the lactose enzyme died.)

I'm fortunate enough that the OTC lactose pills enable me to lead a pretty okay lifestyle (with a lifetime of conditioned milk avoidance, too).

You might want to talk to [livejournal.com profile] wikdsushi, whom I know has been through many food allergy and other digestive adventures.

Also, let's not get me started on MYSTERIOUS WOMEN'S DISEASES. Yay, I'm fucked because I have a vagina and no one cares! Sigh.

Oh, gods, I'm so sorry. I was really rooting for a nice treatable gut bug.

Going through the food allergy testing is a nightmare, but if it finds the answer, it's generally a much nicer answer (don't eat food X) than IBS (which isn't quite "don't eat" but is pretty damn vague and unhelpful). And hey, you're already halfway on an elimination diet. I have a friend who turned out to be allergic to corn, and of course corn syrup is in everything - but as long as she avoids it, she gets a fairly normal life.

I've been flirting with the fringes of IBS muself - my family has a history of gut problems with the women, and IBS is about the only co-morbid fatigue/fibro thing I haven't got so far - so I greatly sympathize with yourupset-ness, and really hope this is something more treatable and curable.

And am very glad Crohn's is ruled out.

And totally feel you on the damn women's diseases bullshit. WTF does my gender have to do with my immune system really anyway? Fucking estrogen. And yes, just to really piss us off, high-estrogen women are slightly more likely to come down with immune disorders.

If God is female, she's a PMSy bitch who hates us.

I can't remember details right now, but if you are blood-type A, then apparently our IBS is really responsive to cognitive behavioral therapy. someone posted in another friend's journal when she was referred to an allergist. Haven't had time to look into it myself, as mine is so minor when I can control the stress, but will dig it out if you like.

I'm just glad that it doesn't seem to be anything worse than IBS, although that in itself isn't the most pleasant of complaints to suffer from.

My mum has had IBS for years now, and it's only in the past two or three years that she's managed to get it under control by going on a gluten-free and dairy-free diet. She now eats no wheat or any other products containing gluten (there are a lot of specialist gluten-free foods available here now) and uses only soya milk, but she looks healthier than I've ever seen her, and I can no longer tease her about being a walking guide book to the location of every public toilet in the UK ;O)

*cheers*

cheering the lack of amoebas.

Well, you're getting closer to a solid diagnosis and (hopefully then,) a workable treatment. That's positive. IBS is also a much less difficult condition to treat than quite a few others with similar symptomology.

I'm sorry you're still not feeling better, though.

Oddly enough, I developed my own shellfish allergy at the ripe old age of 26, was only diagnosed with my MSG allergy at 24 and my sunflower allergy at 25. Now they believe I'm mildly lactose intolerant (at age 33!) At least in my own experience, it's not unusual for allergies or food intolerances to develop as you get older. Now if they could only narrow down my stomach thing, I'd be happy. ;-)

I do hope you feel better soon.

I'm glad you're getting closer to a diagnosis, and that it's likely that it's not something like Crohn's.
