words I love

So the audition I have next week is for this: http://www.proto-type.org/audition.html and I _want_ it, because a) I love working at P.S. 122, and b) this seems uniquely suited both to my affect and interests. It may not work with my schedule, both because of other art on the burner and other things that are crazy important to me, but it's a moment to Make a Good Showing.

So, for the audition, I have to just bring a short text I really love -- doesn't have to be funny, or dramatic or tragic or anything. I just have to be really into it.

Current thoughts are:

- that thing about machines and self-awareness from the Sewell play, which is both relevant to this show, and is something I love, and is odd and hard to find an audition fit for.

- Valerie's letter from V for Vendetta, which I would bring without hesitation if the movie weren't recently released, which makes it unlikely I will bring it, but I wanted to mention it. I've always loved the cadence of it, more than anything. Note: I love letters. I love letters that can be performed.

- A passage from Arc d'X which I love, but always avoid because it's a) from a novel and b) about abuse (yawn yawn yawn), but has it's power not in content or emotion, but again, in the very precise rhythm and repetition of words. It's like a sestina in prose. Perhaps the answer here is not to use that passage, but a passage from a different Erickson book, where a young woman talks about how she could call the cats that howled in the Kansan fields to her. It's equally eerie, without being One Of Those Pieces.

- Something more brilliant than all of these that I just can't think of yet. Which is where all of you come in. What do I love? What do you love? What words have I, or you, or we forgotten?


Seperately, but speaking of Steve Erickson, Black Clock is finally actually taking submissions. It's a small, nearly petty goal, but I would love to see something of mine in that publication, and should perhaps start something with that in mind.


In other news, fucking McDonalds go see today.

If you email me your address I will send you that Christine Schutt book I was on about. It won't make it in time for your audition but the stories are all first-person, and you may find them interesting if not useful.
