Today's Alexander rumour floating about the Internet -- "Even more endangering is something that came out the last days. Although millions of dollars have been spent for pre-production already, Universal recently discovered that they may not have the rights for the novel of Valerio Manfredi which they are basing their movie on. Of course they could come up with something different since Alexander is a historical character, but it would at least push production back if they really don't have them and can secure the rights..."

If this is true, it boggles the mind. I think I need to not read all the gossip shit. Because the yelling at the TV during baseball games is embarassing enough. Yelling at the computer over film gossip....? No no no no no.

This is very much one of those friend of a friend things that goes around the net. The thing is about those things is they always sound too batshit to be true, and yet despite that actually are true a decent amount of the time. Ah well.

And you know, as much as I love the Persion Boy to pieces and have thrown the Manfredi books across the room more than once, the Manfredi books are really right for a Luhrmann project, somehow. And the Renault books aren't -- not that I wouldn't love to see any director whose stuff I like have a go at them sometime. But it's pretty high on the list of things I don't suspect will ever happen.

Well, you figure there are only three things that would be likely to permanently scuttle Lurhmann's reobtaining the rights:

1) Someone else swoops in and grabs them- unlikely, as no one's going to want to be a year behind Stone and Luhrmann in the Alexander race.

2) Manfredi's book gets priced out of the market- also unlikely; it's done well enough, but it's not really Gone With the Wind.

3) Manfredi asks that the rights be withdrawn completely- highly doubtful. The studio would almost certainly sue in that case.

So, yeah- Luhrmann & co. will make some lawyers richer, and the movie will proceed.ˇ
