1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
2. Just one question, please, but it can be complex or multi-part if you like.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

(and yes I'm still working on that other meme I owe you all responses to)

Where are you on fandom, these days?

I reread old fics I like, and read ones that people on my flist rec, but that's about it.

Nowhere really. I mean other than Descensus. I mean, I'm not sure I can describe how much we live there. That said, I have no idea where the new HP fics are or what I should be reading or anything. I don't think i've read anything post book-6. Where is it all? I'm still bumping into old fics I've either forgotten or had missed (I found some Sushi stuff I hadn't read before the other day). i mean, Corvus Fallere just updated. Seriously though, no idea. Meanwhile, I was reminded today that someone, reallly really should write a fic about Gigolo Joe from AI learning to do his job. I'm just saying.

I have never understood fan-fiction. I don't understand why people do it.

I'm not saying I haven't had an urge to build upon an idea, but I usually want to make it my own in everyway.

Of course, this isn't an accusation: as a writer, why do you write fan fiction and what do you get out of it and if you wrote the next Harry Potter-like phenom, would you read your fans' fan-fic?

I wouldn't read fanfic about my own work until I was done with my own work, because it might distract me from my own characterization process. I'd be happy to read about theories coming out of it though. I've actually had fanfic written off of a fanfic I wrote, because it was totally not my characterizations of the cannon characters nor was the tonal qualities of my OC's what I felt was correct, but it was so clear, eventhough I couldn't tell you why, that the story was something that the writer needed to be writing. I didn't follow the whole thing, but I was zen with it, even if my characters felt a little indignant.

I suppose I write fanfiction for the same reason I act -- because it gives me pleasure to inhabit others, or to have them inhabit me.

Are there any plans in Descensus for covering November 1, 1981? I don't recall ever seeing that covered in HP fic from the Death Eaters' point of view.

In terms of us going through that time, yes. In terms of writing that night, I don't know.

Why is it that so much fanfic focuses on the sexual lives of the characters? Is it possibly because of the lack thereof in canon ? ( This is not limited to HP fanfic, but all fanfic in general ).

Aside from the "oh that's hot" factor, which come on, let's face it is what it's about. As humans we think about sex constantly. I think character is revealed in extremis, and sex is a particularly fun interation of that to use.
