Wow, I totally overslept and now must go to work and visit my mom and bring her DVDs for her boredom.
Very interested in the results of yesterday's costuming poll. I was surprised so many people were into the idea of Hogwarts student Snape, but then I look the way I look, look quite young and everyone is all "OMG movie 5!" right now. I also thought more people would be into the vulture hat idea, but I suppose you all like Snape (or me) enough that you care about the lack of dignity, or you just asked yourself what I did "Where does one get a hat-appropriate vulture?" I told Amanda the other day that if I do, do the vulture-hat costume I'l really have to tone down the way I walk in heels. Then I realized that the way I walk in heels might actually make it far far funnier. Despite the low number of votes, the silver gown will be coming with because it's already something that was completely done for another non-HP occassion (and isn't bulky), so it would be silly not to have with. I am also trying to figure out how to link in my Regency men's outfit for the costume ball with HP -- whose ancestor am I? or who in the HP-world that I could possibly pass as would dress up like that? (let us remember that while the clothes are very covering, they're also _very_ closely tailored, which is to say "I should probably pack."). I am, thus far, at a big zero (non-inbred Voldemort ancestor?). Of course, once it's here and I've tried it on, the answer may be more forthcoming, especially after I post pictures for you all.
I am going to try to plan the Snakes Alive! event, although not sure when -- September at the earliest. Also those of you who don't dress up asking if we can dress up (
lawnrrd I'm looking at you)? Is that about school girl skirts or "hahaha, I want to see Rach yell at tourists in the museum while dressed as Snape"?
Currently, I am trying to write the content for an object I'll be creating for Descensus -- esentially an obnoxious birthday gift from Bellatrix to Narcissa. If any of you (and I bet some of you do) have links to the text of any old, dated, agonizingly absurd material on stuff prospective brides should know -- either about married life or their wedding night, please post. As I have to come up with, and write, in that awful unctious tone, "Preparing for Marriage: 10 Things Every Pureblood Witch Should Know." It will be very funny, but may also be migraine inducing. I am hoping to include illustrations. Yes, I'm afraid too. I'm the one with this arts and crafts project living on my desk.
Must. do. laundry.
Also must expand the gluten-free repetoire. I'm getting really bored with my choices.
It has cooled down enough here that I now actually feel cold when I get out of the shower. It is amazing. I had a nightmare last night that we're going to have another heatwave though. luckily, I only ever know about rain, so this can be ignored.

Date: 2006-08-13 05:49 pm (UTC)Meanwhile, on Project Gutenberg, there is a collection of plays (including "How a Man May Choose a Good Wife from a Bad" and "The Miseries of Enforced Marriage"), Our Deportment; or, THE MANNERS, CONDUCT AND DRESS
OF THE MOST REFINED SOCIETY; INCLUDING Forms for Letters, Invitations, Etc., Etc. Also, Valuable Suggestions on Home Culture and Training (perhaps a winner, there), and Practical Suggestions for Mother and Housewife.
Randomly, here is a page listing various Regency publications (which, if you went a-Googling, you could probably find issues scanned online with the original content, some of which must talk about the duties of wifeliness), Aristotle has this to say, and this article discusses the "240-page hardbound book given away to newlyweds just before the war," The Real Home Keeper: A Perpetual Honeymoon for the Vancouver Bride.
Whee.
