RATING: PG
NOTES: Takes place after The Privilege of the Sword
DISCLAIMER: These lovely characters belong, of course, to Ellen Kushner
Dear Master,
I hope you have recovered suitably from your journey and find yourselves comfortable and well-amused in your new home. Have you one yet? Is it like the Riverside house or Highcombe – your part of Highcombe that is; even now I’ve never really looked at the rest of it. Never wanted to.
I miss you and your lessons. I have good teachers now, and I am getting better and better, but it does grieve me that the sword cannot be the only thing in my life, because I fear that it’s only that way I should ever be as good as you. It’s not fair, but at least I can also have dresses again.
I should like very much to ask you about my uncle, but I know he’s reading you this, so we will just both have to pretend he is not and that I haven’t anything to ask you about him either. Perhaps you two will make new friends soon who would also be willing to read letters? Tell him not to worry I suppose and that Marcus says hello.
I will write at greater length once I have heard from you and know you are well.
Love,
Katherine
Dear Katherine,
Yes, we arrived safely and have received your letter. Your uncle is writing this for me I’m not very good at making friends, you should know that by now, Katherine, and I’m just so glad to be on dry land – boats are horrible and I don’t recommend them he was deathly ill for the entire voyage. It was rather funny in its way -- that that we haven’t explored much yet at all we’ve been having sex constantly, but I don’t think he wants me to tell you that, but will tell you all about it when we do. Maybe one day you could visit us we’ve already created at least one minor scandal! It’ll be just like home, but with less boring people and better weather. Alec’s writing more than I’m speaking, so whatever it is, I’m sorry. No he’s not. He’s laughing. I miss you too. Please tell me about your lessons and whatever news of the city won’t make us miss it too badly. Are they still calling for my head?
-Richard
And Alec. You musn’t forget that I’m the one who made you learn all the awful things he taught you. Next time, I expect my own letter. I suppose complaining about rudeness in Tremontaine would be less than reasonable. Do remember though, Katherine, I am less than reasonable. How are my houses?
