strikethrough '07 ongoing commentary

I'm still deeply angry about all this.

And I just went off about it, again: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/240498.html?thread=10286962#t10286962

i love it that you are so eloquently taking them to task on all this. I am losing hope that they'll do something, but they should always be reminded.

Thanks for letting me know about this latest development. Don't know why I hadn't friended the comm yet. :does so:

In wanting to restrict, in some scary, nebulous, undefined way, as yet unknown forms of legal speech, 6A is really saying that it does want some people to be alone. That's not what LJ used to be about. And it's not what the Internet is about. And it depresses me more than I, as someone who has fought so often for my mere right to exist, can say that it seems clear no amount of eloquence or anger on this issue is going to reach you.

Put very well, and the last concern is what gets me. This response completely bypassed what so many posters have been telling them, passionately and eloquently, and instead tried to make everyone feel better by throwing out this donation idea--which, of course, was pioneered by the fandom community ages ago.

Awesome. I strongly suggest you also post this to [livejournal.com profile] news where the general announcement of the permanent accounts is. The dissent needs to be seen everywhere.

And to much greater effect. If LJ were to make $1Million on this sale, theyw ould only give $9K to each of the listed charities.

Yep. And that'd be a great amount--except it's also giving much more money to a questionable organization, and making people complaisent about that organization's other actions. Plus there's nothing like self-serving, costing-nothing-extra donations to keep people from taking real action.

I'm checking out [livejournal.com profile] news now.

Many people running or investing in "social software" companies are entranced by the prospect of "monetizing eyeballs". They forget that eyeballs are fragile.

If you handle them with due care, you will not make as much of a profit on each eyeball as you might have expected. But if you treat them casually, then you'll be ankle-deep in vitreous humor before the eyeballs even show up on the marketplace.

I have another LJ friend who thinks that as many people as possible should try to buy permanent accounts, on the theory that if we give them enough money advertising revenue won't be something they can be threatened with again.

Yeah, uh huh.
