And to much greater effect. If LJ were to make $1Million on this sale, theyw ould only give $9K to each of the listed charities.

Yep. And that'd be a great amount--except it's also giving much more money to a questionable organization, and making people complaisent about that organization's other actions. Plus there's nothing like self-serving, costing-nothing-extra donations to keep people from taking real action.
