I don't practice, but when you're Jewish, you're well, always Jewish. You can't really be a lapsed Jew, the way you can be a lapsed Catholic or Mormon or something. A Jew is a Jew is a Jew both to people who aren't okay with that and to history.

So this is interesting, and I would like to go sometime.

This reminds me of a save-the-children-type commercial i saw on tv a few days ago.. It was from this group (http://www.ifcj.org/site/PageServer?pagename=programs_isaiah), and kept showing jews crying and saying 'help a needy jew today' and things like that, and i wasn't sure whether it was a joke or not until i realized it was a 'charity' group that was obviously in the business of converting people. i've just never seen a religious group targeted like that , at least not on tv.

anyway, it had me, my dad, and my sister laughing..

I have been trying to explain this to some friends in NM. It is, apparently, an impossible concept to grasp.

I thought the part of the article about some people being upset about commercialization of Jewish culture by a country that was part of their slaughter was interesting, like, similar to Native American stuff in the US, and on a different level how being 'black' or how some queer stuff can be hip in white or straight communities.

A friend of mine in college, a Dianic Wiccan, once remarked that Jews on pagan email lists would spend enormous amounts of time debating close textual analyses of pagan sacred texts--even though the texts under discussion were only about fifty years old.

(But of course. What else do you do with sacred texts? I still have trouble understanding why Protestants who consider the Christian scriptures "the literal word of God" aren't at least feeling guilty that they can't read those scriptures in the original Greek.)
