I have two email plane fare notifiers. One for Austin, and one for Sydney. I get email if the fares to either drop below $200 or $1400 respectively (I'm thinking of lowering the Sydney one since it seems there are occassionally tickets to be had for under 1K). So this morning, there's a notifier for AUS for $189. In my addled brain I think this is Australia and I click on it to see who made a typo. Duh, it's Austin (when did I forget my airport codes? SYD is Sydney) ... right, I have to go there, like really soon! Oh man, I can fly to Austin for the same price as the bus. Happy dance.

No, no no, no no. Because the fare is only available November 27th and 28th.

Bastards. Can't they filter out useless fare notifications?

If you find a cheap trip to Houston, I'd be willing to drive you to Austin and back.

If you don't have to buy your bus fare in advance and you're okay with a fly sat return mon/tue, you might want to either watch www.webflyer.com, the section called DealWatch or get on American Airlines and Continental's last minute fare email list, since they both hub in TX. Domestic Fares are usually published on Tuesday which may or may not give you enough time to catch your bus.

Southwest also does last minute fares (sort of...you have to book 14 in advance but they are more flexible on the scheduling.), and flying out of NYC, you would have to hike to Long Island, Islip to catch your plane. I don't think they exchange info via WorldSpan or Sabre so the airline engines usually leave them out.
