I have a close friend as my durable power of attorney for health care (whether I'm incapacitated or not, she could make decisions for me right now if she wanted to). Right now I don't have anyone for financial decisions but she is informally that too. I'm not sure if it's just about marriage; lots of us have reason not to have our biological families have control and would rather choose others to make decisions for us.

This story is just sad though, jeez.
