[livejournal.com profile] maryh10000 does a good job at trying to make sense of why fans like Snape and why JKR can't figure out what's wrong with us.

The question it raises, for me, and that I've always wondered about, is where JKR herself was in the school pecking order as a girl. She's talked about being like Hermione, but what were her friendships like and what status/immunity in playground politics to they afford her?

Kim's theory (and that of me, the other Jo ;) is that she was probably reasonably popular. As someone who was bullied just as badly as Snape was, I've never gotten just... well, how do I describe it? Just the sense that she doesn't particularly like or sympathize with Snape because she never went through something similar.

I fear I can't really describe it better without citing chapter and verse, as it were.
