That was incredible. I couldn't figure out why he was crying (afraid of losing his office?) until he got to the part about his daughter and staff members. Then I realized he was crying out of shame for not waking up sooner about the separate but equal thing.
It's an amazing example of realization dawning on someone and them thinking, "how could it have taken me this long?"
He may also have been crying because this was SCARY. And he did it anyway. And honestly, that read of it, while it may not be accurate, may, I hope, be the one that gets other people off their asses. I really feel like this decision and the way he announced it has the power to make a significant change.
Scary how? That was my first thought, i.e. afraid of losing his office (also face, financial support, etc.) which is the main holdup on many officials who are pushing the civil union thing.
I think we need a new slogan for the marriage equality act. "Civil Unions? Even NEW JERSEY has civil unions. Do you want your state to be 'just as good as New Jersey'? Same-sex Marriage. Legalize and you'll finally be cooler than New York."
I think face. I mean I think it wasn't practical fear so much as just gut fear. Here's someone speaking out for something that probably everything he ever learnt as a child and everyone who ever helped him along his way in politics not only said was a bad idea, but probably cast really crappy aspersions about. I have to suspect that he thought lightening was going to come down on his head doing that, and that when a week goes by and it hasn't, he'll be like "oh. okay."
Also, you have to consider that he has now put himself in the crosshairs of every conservative and psuedo moderate religious group in the nation. This might be the equivalent of committing political suicide, as he can now no longer classify himself as a "moderate", but to the left of social issues.
Hopefully, San Diegans will reward their mayor for his courage.
