Generations of Socialist Realism have made the Russian populance crave bizarre art? Hah. Well, that is my private theory anyhow. I've seen in contemporary Russian art a lot more of the strange and otherworldly than I see in other places. Plus, you know, life is in some ways too bizarre to be believed. Starbucks is in Moscow, but the government is perhaps worse than the Soviets were and people still don't have what they need.

It/'s a brief editorial/article on how children's nature is not adequately reflected in their toys and how those two artists bring forth the weird and demonic side of the childhood imagination. (Nabokov quote about how the true nature of childhood is demonic.)

Fascinating; running the text through a translator yesterday made almost no sense. I'd especially liked the truly frightening-looking toys nearer the end of the article.

I actually thinks it's pretty cool. Even more than commenting on childrens' nature, it's also messing with the standards of corporate sterility...seeing these traditional plastic shapes become disturbing evokes an interesting emotional response.

Some of those last ones remind me of that bizarre Quiznos commercial that featured singing rats with horrible mouths.
