I think this film is just going to confound people -- I mean really, musicals confuse us enough, this musical has always been complicated and add to that Tim Burton's utter sincerity and Johnny Depp's unavoidable playfulness and woah, this is going to be one uncomfortable heightened reality.

I think the musical is brilliant.

However, I'm always wary of Burton's work. He's great - but sometimes, he's just too much.

And then there is Johnny Depp. Cue me puking. All in all, though, I think he might be a good pick for the role.

I'm just stuck on the "holy shit - that's Alan Rickman" aspect of things, though.

Wow! I've been looking forward to this one since I first heard of it, and I am even more after seeing this.

I hate musicals and I want to see this. Did I see Bellatrix and Snape in there?

Sweeny Todd is one of my favorite musicals from childhood (I was an odd girl) and in a way I can't wait and in another way I'm scared this will suck.

I think it's going to be amazing, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to psych myself up to see it. The 1982 version with Angela Lansbury nearly did me in when I saw it years ago.

Eeep! I will have to actually go to the theater for this!

So excited. I'm dying here. I think Depp is an inspired choice, and it would be so nice to see a Burton movie that wasn't disappointingly slight, though I'm a little concerned about Helena Bonham Carter. She's Mrs. Lovett, right? Can she pull that off? I think of her as very much a dewy girlish mad scene type of actress, and Mrs. Lovett isn't mad. She's clear-eyed, pragmatic (if sentimental), and ruthless. I guess I just won't be able to think of anyone except Lansbury playing her until I see it. Fingers crossed. Hot damn I love that musical, and I'm still kicking myself for not wangling tickets to the one on Broadway last year. This could be a nice consolation prize. From the trailer, the thing looks sort of humorless, but I trust Burton (And Borat! Wut?) to get the laughs in.

Hmm. I'm not sure. Depp can do the acting, but I'm not sure he has the voice. I'm worried about Burton focusing on the look to the detriment of the music, which is the thing I love about that show.

Just . . . argh. I mean-- obviously Depp can act the role, but if it's all going to be this aggravating speak/singing/whispering with the occasional line of reedy singing thrown in . . .no. Just . . . no. And Helena Bohnam Carter doing her "Look at my big hair!! I must be WEIRD!!" thing, and Tim Burton doing his "Look at my girlfriend's tits! They're HUUUUUGE" thing . . . I really want to like the film, but so far I'm pretty wary.

I gotta say though, I'm really excited for Sascha Baron Cohen's turn as Perelli.

I have the Lansbury / Hearn DVD if you want to borrow it.

What I'm trying to figure out is if the singing is going to be as you describe (which is also my great fear) or if this is what's happening in the trailer because the studio doesn't want people to know it's a musical, which seems weird, but lately, what doesn't?

My judgment is also clouded by having been a fan of ridiculously good performances (George Hearn, and also Michael Cerveris-- though I didn't see the most recent one, just heard the cast album). But to me, Sweeny needs a big, gorgeous, rich, booming bad-ass voice. I'm just worried that they're doing the music this way because Depp can't hack it as a singer-- and so then the whole performance becomes about whispering.

But again, I could be wrong. Just Burton seems to be a fan of thin, clear-toned voices, and I can't see that working well for most of the roles in the musical.

Yeah, I think that's true. I also think my standards for singing in movie musicals is pretty low -- not so much because of the ones that have worked, but because I will never forget the horror that is the Phantom of the Opera movie.

Oh, Jeebus . . . let's not even talk about that.

It's just a weird thing, with Sweeny particularly. It's not like Angela Lansbury had the greatest voice, but she's still able to pull off those songs better than anyone (*cough* PattiLupone*cough*).

But, we'll see. I do really want it to be awesome. Like, I hope in my heart of hearts that I'll be totally blown away and it will be the movie-musical of my dreams. And maybe it will!!

Though actually, I'll probably have to wait for DVD, cause I'll be gone when it comes out!
