I now understand better why I am met with contempt whenever I dare to stick my head into this world. Not because I agree with or promote the negative male stereotype, but because I'm a member of the gender most associated with it and therefore assumed to be one of the ' bad guys ' by default.

As for bruised ego, I'm lacking in ego, so it's hard to bruise. Think of it more like a revelation over several unrequired blows to the head I've taken over the years for being one of " Them ".
The point being made, and I think it's a legitimate one (it was my first reaction to your comment too, and I _know_ you) is that you took a post about women's experiences that was explicitly not attacking men but a misogynistic culture both men and women buy into and made it about you.
It was about me, in so much that it helped me understand the reasoning behind alot of the attitude(s) that are handed to me. In that sense, yes it is about me. In the greater sense, it was more like " OH! So THAT'S why people act that way " more than " Oh poor me ".
Do you knwo me to be an egoist? I'd like to know.
Outside of that though, it is not expressly about me, but about myself and many other people who have been unfairly judged , or not recognized for not fitting the mold. The people who recognize, change , and fight against this sort of thing get a toss off one like " well this doesn't apply to EVERYONE, but ...... ". I don't recall ever having seen anything in print, rant, or otherwise that says " Thanks to you who aren't asses ". I've made the point before that the people who disagree with what this culture represents in this vein are often unfailry grouped in without so much as a thought.
My whle point being ... I did get a message from this, and the message was genrically negative against a group of people of which I happen to be a member of. I think that it's unfair to categorize people like myself ( and there are quite a few of us ). I honestly came to understand better why I've been treated the way I have - and I'm sure other people have too.
I took a minute to think about this. I'm told that it seems that I'm making a statement of " poor me " ... that's not the point I'm getting at. I was lift with a bad taste in my mouth because while I agree with what was said, and I agree that the things outlined do exist - there are many people ( myself included ) who do not subscribe and in fact fight aganst it, that get nothing more than a token footnote.
It's not hard to picture it. Imagine the rejection, abuse and isolation that comes from being male and supporting the point of view expressed? I bristle at the descriptions of so called " men " who act like asses, and exploit the so called " male privilege " , and other males around me give me no end of greif for it. Now take all that, and walk up to a crowd of people and say " I agree with you - and I support your point of view " and have rocks thrown in your face.
Men are not underrepresented , but men who think rationally and with an open mind are.
I also thing that the opinios stated on television are a little off. After spending 10 years in the industry, I can tell you that it's all about money - not gender. the first and only order of business is making money. After that then you can pile in things like focus groups or who a show is targeted to ( people with money, or a specific group of people who have money ). Programs that are directed towards women are directed towards women with money. Programs that are directed towards men are likewise directed towards moen with money. Very little consideration is taken at the higher levels about what messages are being sent or who a program is directed to. At lower levels people prattle on about how this show sends a social message and that show promotes this ideal or that ideal ... but at the end of the day it's the money, not the mssage that matters.
Meh... I think the author exaggerates where it suits her argument. Just my opinion. But I don't want to distract and make it seem like I made the article "all about me".
