I am trying to assemble a bunch of Descensus pieces to submit for a fanfiction reading at Terminus. I'm definitely including the Halloween piece with Lily, and I think I want to include that weird, moody Severus/Narcissa thing (http://community.livejournal.com/descensus_hp/15672.html) - but is that safely rated R (pieces can be R, but not NC-17)? I think it's okay, but I am not sure.

Well, according to the standards set by writing.com, their R level rating is:

"18+: Recommended for Readers 18 Years and Older Only
18 and Older
This rating signifies that the content of this item is intended for readers 18 years of age and older and may be inappropriate for any minor under the age of 18. This item may contain references to sex, drugs, alcohol, violence, harsh or sexually derived cursing, derogatory names or combinations thereof."

Sounds like you'd fall here based on the piece.

Same thing from The Young Writers Society:

"R: A topic should be rated R if it has any of the following elements:

- Graphic content
- It is sexually explicit
- Has the 'F' word"

In terms of movies, Trainspotting was rated "R" so I think your piece could HARDLY be considered NC-17 under current standards. Personally, I feel it's PG-13 for the content, but as you're describing a very complicated and intense sexual situation (though most of the description is of the emotions and people involved rather than the sex itself) it's probably better to err on the side of caution and give it an R so that you don't run the risk of reading your nice work to an audience that won't appreciate it properly or be caught off-guard.

But it's not NC-17 right? It's not blow by blow... I'm like "oh shit, I mentioned breasts!"

I'm really weird about that piece, as we all know by now.

I really wish we had some H/D I could read, but all our H/D is hilariously graphic.

It's not NC-17 at all-you barely mention the sex part (and in trainspotting, we had an 'underage' naked girl bouncing up and down on Rent-Boy and it was R) and you only swear once. The R is stretching it, believe me.

I was thinking about the well loved Bachelor Party story too-if there was any way to read excerpts from that because it's soooo good!

I know! I will have to talk to Kali about this immediately upon her return, as there's only about another week or so to get this together, and I'm applying for a 50 minute reading this time instead of a 20 minute one.

I think the difference between R and NC-17 is roughly equivalent to the difference between movies with graphic sex and porn. One is part of a much broader story and (theoretically) should be important to the telling of that story; the other doesn't actually have a story to speak of outside the sex. Obviously some NC-17 stuff is more themeful and character driven than your average porn flick, and then things get really complicated.
