Why Sci-Fi Is the Last Bastion of Philosophical Writing

ever since i took a course on science fiction at college, i've felt that sci fi is *the* literature for this age. oh well, let me stretch that a bit and include most of what's called 'sf' or speculative fiction. after you've finished chronicling the past and preserving for posterity the icky details of your present, what else can you do but speculate about the future? or alternative worlds/ situations/ societies/ lives? what else is there but sf?
