I'd be irritated. It's more an attack than a promotion.

I can see why you'd have mixed feelings about this. The author of this piece is actually telling JK to back off fans who write about her HP world, and it is so awesome to have gained enough notoriety amongst all the "shelves jammed" with HP books to be mentioned!

On the other hand, you don't wanna be sued or anything for doing something out of love for the HP world and in good faith with your publisher.

I guess my bottom line is kinda like Kathy Griffin's: Any publicity is great publicity!

Are you familiar with "The Books of Magic", a graphic novel series that came out - oh jeez - at least 15+ years ago (can't recall exactaly when/author). It was created before Harry Potter and is why I have been crusty towards Harry - in my opinion HP is sooooo fimilar to TBoM, even the main character looks similar. Some of the main points are slightly different, but close enough in idea to consider if JK hadn't read them. Honestly, I have always been waiting for that author to come after JK.

Yeah, I read about the lawsuit a couple days back and thought about posting something - in my lj or your comments. But I couldn't resolve what it is I really wanted to say about it, other than that it instantly made me think of your work and the differences/similarities.

Do they do 'royalties' from 'sampling' in literature like they do in music? I don't know that I've ever heard of such a thing and, frankly, I'm not so sure it's a good thing. I kind of like the little quotes that lead off chapters in some of my favorite authors' works. And it'd be a shame to see those quotes removed from future works in order to save a penny here or there.
