- to add insult to injury, I have a cold.
- had a civil conversation with my mother last night. It did not contain an apology and I should stop holding my breath. Explanations is as close as it gets in my family.
- We got Patty packed and ready for Vancouver last night, with me being fussy and tending to her clothes (removing cat hair with tape, etc). I finished her letter for the trip this morning and we'll have lunch before she goes to class and then the airport and I go to fencing. She's delightful and will be home soon, which is also delightful.
- I finally got my period, and thus feel less crazy, but like crap. Of course, I have to go to fencing tonight just to show I am not giving up, despite the feeling like crap.
- I've been listening to Shane Brady obsessively lately, but just like two tracks.
- Ever onward.

Date: 2008-03-26 05:03 pm (UTC)Just remember when you go on the floor you have an advantage - as you have already been blooded this day!
Rally!
I'm totally fascinated by the fencing thing. I'd love to come and see sometime. It's one of those things that's always fascinated me that I've never known anyone to actually DO.
How does a beginner begin?

Date: 2008-03-26 05:40 pm (UTC)Generally it is recommended you come to observe a class and after that you can take a free class and see how you feel about it.
In classical fencing (which is what I do, not Olympic-style sport fencing), the beginning of things can feel particularly daunting. A lot of time is learning how to stand and move before you ever touch a foil. You really have to give it about three months, I would say, to know if it is something passionate about (or, you might just immediately, be willing to work through that beginning without difficulty, depends on a lot of things, but that beginning is hard on people as a rule).
Our MeetUp group is here: http://fencing.meetup.com/39/
There are free open houses one a month.
You can also just visit the Academy's website and make arrangements to observe a class under more regular circumstances. That's at http://www.martinez-destreza.com

Date: 2008-03-26 10:34 pm (UTC)If you do, is it because of your body temperature being at 98.6º normally? I know mine is usually at 97.4º, which makes 98.6º a slight fever for me. It also means I only get sick about twice a year (though I'm usually down for the count for a couple of weeks during those times).
