please tell me I don't have to go to the 24 hour apple store right now

iPOd froze up.
Itunes won't recognize it.
Screen also won't go into saver mode.
I can't fix it.
Do I have to bring it to the Apple store right now to make sure it doesn't burn an image onto the screen and ruin the thing?

I've had to do that maybe two or three times in the three year life of my iPod (I've got one of the old minis). I think it has to do with how much I let the battery run down. Otherwise, it works fine.
