iPOd froze up.
Itunes won't recognize it.
Screen also won't go into saver mode.
I can't fix it.
Do I have to bring it to the Apple store right now to make sure it doesn't burn an image onto the screen and ruin the thing?

Try this. Worked for me when it happened to me.

Support.apple.com has really extensive archives on troubleshooting all their wares.

Okay, so far so good (although it took the last of those many different ideas to work.

Are they always like this? And what makes them act up?

perhaps once a week one has to press those two buttons at once like that. I am not sure what makes it happen. I know unplugging it from the computer without ejecting it definitely does this, but sometimes there are more mysterious things too. on the whole quite reliable though, and the fix is not hard when you know it. I LOVE my ipod.

I've had mine for a couple of years now, and it only did this once, and if there was an outside stimulus that caused it, I have no idea what it was. About all I can say is that really complicated technological devices can go wrong in a lot of really complicated and subtle ways.

Always try to reboot first (as I see you've discovered).

Mine occasionally has bouts where that doesn't work. If that happens, let the battery die, THEN plug it in to charge. I've never had it not bounce back from that.

Agreed. About once every two weeks or so I'll confuse the tiny thing's brain by hitting too many buttons at once and it'll freeze up. The battery dies on its own -- at most, my mini will take 14 hours (the full battery life). Then you can just recharge it. No negative consequences so far as I can tell.

I don't know when Corporate America decided that it was okay to ship crap goods that didn't perform as advertised, but I think the joke's starting to wear thin.

I had few problems with mine, before Sola put it in a glass of chocolate milk (cost to repair? the price of a new one! imagine that), but I had to reboot it ... probably three or four times in two years, and it wasn't new when I got it.

i see you figured it out, but did you get the applecare contract? if not, do it. trust me. i've had mine over two years and have had it replaced twice for free because of things that couldn't easily be fixed.

i have to reboot my 5 year old ipod whenever it has absolutely no battery power left and I connect it to the computer without charging it a little first. then I reboot it, let it charge, reboot it again, and all is well.

I've had to do that maybe two or three times in the three year life of my iPod (I've got one of the old minis). I think it has to do with how much I let the battery run down. Otherwise, it works fine.

My son's does that on occasion. After he panicked the first time, I googled the issue, found the two button salute, and we've only had to do it a few times since to make it behave.

You figured this out, but when in doubt, use these gradations:

1) restart if possible

2) let the battery run all the way down, then charge

3) wipe it back to original factory settings and refill

4) take to Apple store and see if your firmware is up to date (which is what happened to mine).

I've had that happen once. I went to [livejournal.com profile] ipod and they helped a lot.

Mine does that from time to time as well. I don't know why, and it seems to correct itself if I leave it alone long enough. Weird.
