please tell me I don't have to go to the 24 hour apple store right now

iPOd froze up.
Itunes won't recognize it.
Screen also won't go into saver mode.
I can't fix it.
Do I have to bring it to the Apple store right now to make sure it doesn't burn an image onto the screen and ruin the thing?

i have to reboot my 5 year old ipod whenever it has absolutely no battery power left and I connect it to the computer without charging it a little first. then I reboot it, let it charge, reboot it again, and all is well.
