please tell me I don't have to go to the 24 hour apple store right now

iPOd froze up.
Itunes won't recognize it.
Screen also won't go into saver mode.
I can't fix it.
Do I have to bring it to the Apple store right now to make sure it doesn't burn an image onto the screen and ruin the thing?

My son's does that on occasion. After he panicked the first time, I googled the issue, found the two button salute, and we've only had to do it a few times since to make it behave.
