It sounds like what someone once said / wrote (I can't remember) about being an ER doc (I think). It's hours and hours of waiting, punctuated by a few minutes now and then of sheer TERROR.

Someone somewhere said that about war. Mother Teresa or some missionary type said that the worst thing about helping people was that it was so boring.
I'm not sure how this helps.
