So, what's to do in Atlanta other than Dragon*Con (and Waffle House)?

Also, who's going?

It will have to be next year for me, alas.

WAFFLE HOUSE.

Says the girl who can't eat waffles. But then I can't do that other thing either.

Bwahaha.

Seriously, like I think the cosplaying issue is my greatest drama? I just might bust up laughing sort of constantly and inappropriately.

Well, let's be fair. That's the usual state of affairs when we get together.

I was thinking I have never been to Atlanta. Then I remember I went a few years ago! I was pregnant and very sick so that's probably why I blocked it for a minute.

They really have the most spectacular aquarium I have ever seen. It's pricey but, as I said, spectacular.

Also, my friend Dale does some work for Spiral Entertainment. They don't have an event happening during Dragon*Con but they have a calendar of Atlanta events: http://www.spiralentertainment.com/events/

I'll be there, attending Doctor Who and Torchwood panels mostly.

I have no idea what else to do in Atlanta, as I'm always too overwhelmed by DragonCon itself to venture beyond.

I'll be at Dragon, sitting outside the Exhibitor's Hall at the Frolicon Booth...just like every year! But there may be a costume this year. First time ever.

As for things to do away from Dragon...good luck getting out of the hotel and to anywhere else. They're not kidding when they say 20,000 people, all weekend, 24 hours a day...in a place meant to hold, oh, say a fifth of that. And with the current downtown road construction, it should be an 'adventure.'

I lived in Atlanta for 3 & 1/2 years. What sorts of suggestions do you want?

Interesting food. Anything of historic interest I might not find out about on my own, any sort of neighborhood to visit that might be fun for walking and shopping if I'm desperate to get away from the Con.

I try to stop there every time.

The area the restaurant is in is very artsy. Lots of shops and quaint spaces as well.

I don't know about near the Con though... I have family all the way around the city, so one spot I know may be an hour away from another.

When a stranger in a strange land, do what I do - go to the concierge, and tell them exactly what you're looking for.

Every day at 3pm, there is a dancing water fountain show w/music in the olympic park, near the aquarium and the coke museum.

It is AWESOME. Seriously awesome. Jumping jets of water set to the William Tell Overture. When it's done, and you're hotter than blue blazes, you can go play in the fountain.

Trip out to Stone Mountain--it's about an hour's drive, but well worth it.

Lots of nice cute little shops near Emory University.

Aforementioned coke museum and aquarium...the coke museum is actually pretty cool. I liked the room where they play old coke TV ads best. Some of them are stupid, some are bizarre, some are really funny, and some are very avante garde.

I'll be at D*C, mostly hanging around the Brittrack events. I was born in Atlanta and lived there for nearly 20 years. However, it keeps changing, so there's a lot of stuff that has grown, moved or disappeared since I lived there. But I visit fairly regularly. I haven't been around downtown Atlanta in ages, so I can't make any recommendations there. But Midtown Atlanta, which isn't far away, is a cool neighborhood in a gentrified, artsy, large-gay-population sort of way. And Piedmont Park is lovely to walk around, or at least it was a few years ago.

I hesitate to make restaurant recommendations for you, but I adore The Flying Biscuit. There's one in Midtown and one near Little 5 Points (the more punk/hippie/artsy/dykey neighborhood that's farther from downtown but still accessible). They're on the Web if you want to check out their menu. Fab breakfast food, not too expensive, good service. There are several cool little neighborhoods in Atlanta where there are nice shops and good restaurants, two of which are along Highland Ave. You could also just drive down Peachtree St., Piedmont Ave. or Ponce de Leon Ave. and see what you come across.
