LJ Idol

I'll be doing LJ Idol again, largely as a way to make myself write about something other than Torchwood.

I won't be "in it to win it" as they say, as I don't think I stand a chance. I grate on people, I'm not accessible (nor am I interested in being so -- I do not write to make people comfortable) and I'm likely staying the bloody hell away from the green room this time. A couple of people tried to bring the drama to me last time, and I was largely able to call that shit out and disengage myself from it quickly, but this time I'd like to avoid it entirely. I also promised people critiques of specific work way back and then never got to it, which, quite rightly (and I am sorry), can't have endeared me to anyone.

But I'll still play.

No. This is the signup week and that was the psot I had to make and link in order to do so.

This concept fascinates me. Consider me curious and likely to watch closely.

It's fun if you're interested in developing personal essay. I will say that good writing is not largely a determinant of how people fare in it, and I was a magnet for both weird praise and weird hostility last season (hence my defensive little post), but I wrote some awesome shit about my life because of it, so it seems like a valuable exercise to do again.

Hm. I should consider it, then. Might be an excuse to make more public posts...

Welcome back!

Green room or no, drama or no, you are a fabulous writer and I am glad you've come round these parts again.

You're braver than I am. (Though most of your entries suggest that.)

Sounds good. I might follow along at home, as I'm getting back into writing, and essay writing is good practice.

I'd love to see what you do this time. Staying out of the social aspect and using it as a personal exercise is certainly respectable, and I hope you find it worth it :)

In truth, the social aspect never really worked for me. It didn't click with my modes of communication, which are really about communicating in my journal or with other people in theirs and generally being substantive (I'm usually only casual in my online communications with people I already know -- I have little interest in superficial interaction with people I don't particularly know because I honestly don't get what it's _for_). So I'll be happy to be social as regards people's entries or their reactions to mine, but my trying to be friendly and perky in the green room is probably a waste of everyone's time. Also by forgoing the social strategy aspect of the game, it gives me more freedom to really say why an entry does or does not grip me.

I completely agree. I always try to look through the GR and see where I could pop in, but I rarely see any point; it all makes me feel like I'm sucking up. I'm sure it's a more valid and natural type of social communication for some people, but not me. Unfortunately I have trouble with constructive comments, too...I should work on that this season.

I'm glad you're on board. It will give me an anchor point when I feel like reading something in the competition that is actually well-crafted.

I don't think I could stomach another season.

As far as the "talent pool" within the context of the contest?

Pearls before swine.

Heh. Thanks. I'm debating forcing myself to leave a comment on every entry, even if it's negative.

Really, honestly, I think you should. Some of these "writers" need to receive some critique instead of the traditional LJ Idol blowing of sunshine up asses.

Hello, person-I-recognize-from-fandom! This is my first LJ Idol, and I'm a bit worried about teh dramaz. Should be ... er ... interesting.

Hello!

My advice, and remember, I didn't even make it to the top 50 is this:

If someone's being an ass to you, call them on it. Don't be nice just in hopes of keeping their vote. They already don't like you. And then after you call them on it? Stop talking. Don't respond to their response. Let it go. Shit dies down fast that way and you look like a functional human. It's all harder than it sounds, but it worked for me, once I figured it out.

I'm entered in as well, and am fairly certain that I'm going to be deemed hoity-toity and inaccessible within a breathtakingly short amount of time, between my vocabulary and my interests.
