I'll hold off until I actually hear an official news release. Perhaps it will be a Season Five regeneration, as it would be odd to have the Time War-themed specials and then have a new Doctor.
Well, I'm sure they can fix that with some plot thingy.
I do mad-heart Tennant's Doctor (and it's masterful acting), eventhough TW is more my show. I mean, I am so entirely about Jack and Ten as the most awesome ex-bf superhero team in creation.
I love Tennant's portrayal of the role but I'm glad there will be someone new, am looking forward to it and for Tennant's sake am glad he got out of playing the same character and not stuck around until the public got sick of him. Might still be only a rumour but yeah - am not sad, not really surprised, just kind of looking forward to the future. Tennant did an awesome job as the Doctor, he's a great actor, looking forward to see if the new guy can give the same kind of quality performance.
Also: looking forward to see Tennant in different roles again. His performance in "Recovery" is right up there with the Ten portrayal for me, so I'm glad he'll have more time for non-Who projects.
I was in the fandom in the transitions from Tom to Peter, then Peter to Colin, then Colin to Sylvester, at which point I drifted away, but that's enough of them to find that there just seems to be a point when I took on a "It's the Circle of Liiiiiiife..." perspective.
(My heartbreak moment was attending a DW convention right after Colin's baby son died. It was a quite a thing to see how a fandom, which didn't have the internet yet to bond through, figured out how to process their grief for a real-life tragedy happening to someone they had come together to celebrate for his fictional joie de vivre.)
I'm with you on the Circle of Life thing. I hit a point where if I squinted my mind just right, they all look like The Doctor from inside my head, like a crystal flashing different facets. I held that jewel for a few months, just pondering it in perfect balance, before I started letting myself have favorites again. Just because he's all the same person doesn't mean I can't like him better when he's got the smoking jacket and the James Bond car.
I have been enjoying Tennant awfully much, though. The look on his face when he saw Sarah Jane for the first time in centuries was when the circuit finally clicked between new and old series for me. I honestly burst into tears at the enormity. I'd been thinking of him as A Doctor, and a perfectly good one, but not The Doctor, and closing that circuit was so intensely wonderful it almost hurt.
(Oh dear. I was never up on fan stuff outside the show back in the old days, so I didn't know this about Mr. Baker the Second. I am retroactively very sorry to hear that. It must have been a terribly strange community experience.)
But David Tennant loves Doctor Who :( I mean, yeah, he's real popular and everything (I assume so, I don't live in the UK) now, but he is so amazing at this role.
The funny thing about Regenerations that make them so awesome is that they are both deaths and births. Tennant had a great run (although I am an Eccleston partisan myself), but think of it this way. We're not losing 10, we're going to gain an 11! Also, at the 4 year mark, Tennant had a great run with some of the best and most memorable stories. Also, Tennant's Doctor will always be unique and inimitable.
Fingers crossed hoping that 11 is as awesome as his (her?) predecessors.
I was however half-braced for Something Horrible when they announced the wonky plans for this next not-quite-season. Of course, being old school Who, I figured we were headed for another 18 month "hiatus".
I will miss Tennant horribly - he has brought so much lovely depth to the character. I'm a little concerned that they will follow old school Who and go so drastically different with #11 that they will, in effect, jump the shark with new fandom. :/
I am still heartbroken about Eccleston leaving the show. Also, Tom Baker who was probably "My" doctor as a child. Then again, he was my second doctor... *shows my age*
