cutting my hair
Nov. 9th, 2008 02:38 pmpros:
- gallifrey one cosplay
- soooo much easier to deal with
- change of pace
- cute
- texture!
cons:
- cannot wear greatcoat with plausible deniability intact
- cold for winter
- will look suspiciously like Rachel Maddow (that said, if I cut my hair, I now blessedly have a photo of a woman to show the hair people)
- Patty digs it long
- can't do awesome 1940s crap with it that makes me feel like I'm in drag and is extra special funny whenever I have an excuse to go swimming (remember ridiculous bikini purchased in Chicago).
- I tend to look fragile with short hair in a way I find discomforting
conclusion:
hair-related decisions? Always about the stupid.

Date: 2008-11-09 07:46 pm (UTC)However, "cold for winter" is going to trump the rest of the arguments, followed by "Patty likes it long".

Date: 2008-11-09 08:10 pm (UTC)And funnily enough, chin length is an awesome style for me, but I can't help still wanting change. And the people at the salon always look at me like I'm going to start crying because I want hair cut off, like I'm going to freak out and start screaming if I get bangs or something.

Date: 2008-11-09 08:11 pm (UTC)-good excuse to wear more hats
-you can finger-wave it if you're feeling retro
-wigs-- who doesn't love a wig?
Cons-
"- I tend to look fragile with short hair in a way I find discomforting"
--Agree. The first week I cut my hair, I felt like a little boy until I femmed up my clothes and got some bigger boots. I kept getting carded. It was annoying.

Date: 2008-11-09 08:30 pm (UTC)I know what you mean - dying mine red means people jump to the right conclusions about my personality. Leaving it (now-with-age-dark-) blonde means people jump to the wrong conclusions. Still, when I dye it I feel like I'm not ME somehow. And when it's long(er) people tend to miss me on their gaydar, which I don't like.
I don't like it being about OTHER PEOPLE but that's how a lot of appearance-based things are, social-signaling as much as self-expression.

Date: 2008-11-09 11:30 pm (UTC)I have found that people assume stupidity when I am my natural dark blonde, and absolutely do NOT when I am dyed-red.
And many people give me grief over dying my hair to a darker colour. Good to know I'm not the only one! *hug*

Date: 2008-11-09 09:28 pm (UTC)I like texture. I say do it, it'll always grow back.

Date: 2008-11-09 09:44 pm (UTC)You could wait until Patty leaves and then cut it. If you cut it now you will have to trim it multiple times before Gallifrey anyway. At least wait until the alterations on the great coat are complete, it might be interesting to see how the Jack drag look goes with it.
Hats can always be worn in the winter for warmth but what sort of hat would you wear with the great coat?

Date: 2008-11-09 11:39 pm (UTC)And sure. I've had short hair before, it's really a matter of my convoluted logistical considerations.

Date: 2008-11-09 10:43 pm (UTC)THAT IS NO CON! D=
(Plus, you should be okay as long as you don't get any Clark Kent spectacles)

Date: 2008-11-10 12:23 am (UTC)Of course, I am also the last person to talk about fandom-based haircuts, so. ;)
Someone commented that they feel less visible on gaydar with longer hair, and OMG YES.
Seeing as I'm currently in a heterosexual relationship, I enjoy not looking "straight." (Coincidentally, he likes that, too. So, bonus.)
Also, yes you'd look like Rachel Maddow. It would be very disconcerting.

Date: 2008-11-10 12:36 am (UTC)Hair cuts are good. They are like therapy, but with less commitment and it is healthier than a crack habit.

Date: 2008-11-10 02:20 pm (UTC)Having seen you both ways, I don't have a particular preference, but would remind you that you and I are both strange creatures who generally look more femme with short hair than long. FWIW.

Date: 2008-11-10 08:53 pm (UTC)And that pic makes me laugh. In the best way.
In general, longer hair is more versatile than shorter hair. And considering how much awesome crap you do with dance and other costume-y fun, keeping it long may serve you better in multiple venues. Even though the pros you mention are right-on in my experience, and I bet it would look good on you. And your hair will grow long again, probably faster than you think it will.
FWIW, I just cut my hair very short because of gender-related stuff kicking up its heels and having the overwhelming feeling of too much hair dammit after my last show closed. I'm enjoying it this short and am seriously thinking about going shorter with the next trim (Note to self: Bring along Maddow pic next time, srsly), although I find I need to wash it more often. And my glasses look super-dorky now.
Good luck with the decision-making process.
