pros:
- gallifrey one cosplay
- soooo much easier to deal with
- change of pace
- cute
- texture!

cons:
- cannot wear greatcoat with plausible deniability intact
- cold for winter
- will look suspiciously like Rachel Maddow (that said, if I cut my hair, I now blessedly have a photo of a woman to show the hair people)
- Patty digs it long
- can't do awesome 1940s crap with it that makes me feel like I'm in drag and is extra special funny whenever I have an excuse to go swimming (remember ridiculous bikini purchased in Chicago).
- I tend to look fragile with short hair in a way I find discomforting

conclusion:
hair-related decisions? Always about the stupid.

outcome:
unknown

Yes, you will look suspiciously like her, but there are worse things.

However, "cold for winter" is going to trump the rest of the arguments, followed by "Patty likes it long".

I always vote for getting the haircut. It grows back and a change in style is always fun. Now granted, I have a lot of pent up desire for hair changes. I wouldn't cut it other than a trim prior to my wedding in May, because I very much wanted to be able to have an awesome updo. However, with my engagement unexpectedly lasting 3 years (weddings are too expensive), I was DESPERATE for hair change. Plus, I honeymooned in St. Croix, and it was so f-ing hot and humid that I never wore my hair in any style except for up in a bun. I cut 9 inches off the weekend I got back.

And funnily enough, chin length is an awesome style for me, but I can't help still wanting change. And the people at the salon always look at me like I'm going to start crying because I want hair cut off, like I'm going to freak out and start screaming if I get bangs or something.

Pros-

-good excuse to wear more hats
-you can finger-wave it if you're feeling retro
-wigs-- who doesn't love a wig?

Cons-

"- I tend to look fragile with short hair in a way I find discomforting"

--Agree. The first week I cut my hair, I felt like a little boy until I femmed up my clothes and got some bigger boots. I kept getting carded. It was annoying.

I know what you mean - dying mine red means people jump to the right conclusions about my personality. Leaving it (now-with-age-dark-) blonde means people jump to the wrong conclusions. Still, when I dye it I feel like I'm not ME somehow. And when it's long(er) people tend to miss me on their gaydar, which I don't like.

I don't like it being about OTHER PEOPLE but that's how a lot of appearance-based things are, social-signaling as much as self-expression.

Oh my gosh, thank you for saying this.

I have found that people assume stupidity when I am my natural dark blonde, and absolutely do NOT when I am dyed-red.

And many people give me grief over dying my hair to a darker colour. Good to know I'm not the only one! *hug*

Man, I have been thinking about the Rachel Maddow hair, too. My only concern is that it will make me look like a preteen boy. :|

I've only seen you with short hair, so that's all I know. Cut it.

Personally I find the more fragile I look, the more assertive I get. Apparently I tend to overcompensate, but it's handy if I want to kick some ass.

I like texture. I say do it, it'll always grow back.

I really like the 1940s hair you're able to do with it longer. I am of the general mentality that you can fake short hair easier than you can fake long hair.
You could wait until Patty leaves and then cut it. If you cut it now you will have to trim it multiple times before Gallifrey anyway. At least wait until the alterations on the great coat are complete, it might be interesting to see how the Jack drag look goes with it.

Hats can always be worn in the winter for warmth but what sort of hat would you wear with the great coat?

HI, I'm over here from Redstapler and I wanted to say Hi because I think you look awesome. Would you like my opinion on hair?

Hi. Thanks.

And sure. I've had short hair before, it's really a matter of my convoluted logistical considerations.

Okay, you don't want to look boyish and Ganymede like, but there are alternative short hairs. You want to get a change so... maybe it would be a good time to try something radical, spiky or coloured?

"will look suspiciously like Rachel Maddow "

THAT IS NO CON! D=

(Plus, you should be okay as long as you don't get any Clark Kent spectacles)

I really love the way you've been wearing your hair recently, which is difficult if you cut it short.

Of course, I am also the last person to talk about fandom-based haircuts, so. ;)

Someone commented that they feel less visible on gaydar with longer hair, and OMG YES.

Seeing as I'm currently in a heterosexual relationship, I enjoy not looking "straight." (Coincidentally, he likes that, too. So, bonus.)

Also, yes you'd look like Rachel Maddow. It would be very disconcerting.

I love your hair short. It never seemed so fragile to me. But then I associate your short hair with a certain steely, fierce attitude.

Hair cuts are good. They are like therapy, but with less commitment and it is healthier than a crack habit.

Is your hair long enough to donate to Locks of Love or sommat? If not, might be nice to wait until it is. :)

That's a good question. I have no idea. I don't think it's been that long in years, but it might be once it's stretched out (it's pretty curly).

Considering that my current quandary is whether it's worth chopping the hair again (something I consider every few minutes anyway) to be Colbert for Halloween next fall? I feel you on the stupid.
Having seen you both ways, I don't have a particular preference, but would remind you that you and I are both strange creatures who generally look more femme with short hair than long. FWIW.

My badly broken right arm has me wondering the same thing about my waist-length hair. So I have no answers, just identification.

But you know you will look hot, either way!

Well, dang. If I'd known about that pic of Rachel Maddow before I got mine cut, I probably wouldn't have had to go to another place (and pay again) to get it cut a second time closer to right. *grump*

And that pic makes me laugh. In the best way.

In general, longer hair is more versatile than shorter hair. And considering how much awesome crap you do with dance and other costume-y fun, keeping it long may serve you better in multiple venues. Even though the pros you mention are right-on in my experience, and I bet it would look good on you. And your hair will grow long again, probably faster than you think it will.

FWIW, I just cut my hair very short because of gender-related stuff kicking up its heels and having the overwhelming feeling of too much hair dammit after my last show closed. I'm enjoying it this short and am seriously thinking about going shorter with the next trim (Note to self: Bring along Maddow pic next time, srsly), although I find I need to wash it more often. And my glasses look super-dorky now.

Good luck with the decision-making process.
