- Barn Dance last night. I'm going to start wearing a pin that says "I am a boy." The level of stupid with the dancing there has gone up, although the event remains delightful and fun and weird.

- Due to two brutal fencing classes and Barn Dance, I am not fencing tonight, because training for a tournament does not mean breaking yourself for a tournament.

- I feel good. This is how my body is supposed to feel. Which sounds insane, as I'm in a lot of pain, but I feel strong again and broad, at least for me, across my back and shoulders.

- We got the SASE back in for the gender balanced ball, so that little cluster fuck is a go.

- If you are interested in attending the fencing tournament, information is here. It is unlikely you will get to see me fence, as it is in an open tournament and most people in it have been fencing far longer than me and only the finals are open to the public.

This is why I like gender-free dances. There aren't many around here, but they do exist, mostly contra dances.

I once spotted a vendor at Pride selling little ceramic penis pendants, and I suggested that an ex of mine (who regularly attended contra dances and other social dances in PA, where she lived) get one to use as a gender signal at dances, because she was complaining about the overabundance of women at the dances who were looking for dance partners but wouldn't dance with other women.

It's never an issue in terms of who dances with who, but very few people who go to this once month event regularly do any other dance of this ilk and without the gender cues get confused as to what is going on. I spend all evening grabbing women as the set progresses going "I'm the boy. Okay, now you go over there."

Today my wrist is killing me from having to push women really hard out of swings to get them in the right place.

Ah, I see. Heh, yeah, that kind of obvious visual clue is a good thing, then.

Bleh, wrist pain is no fun, especially when you spend much of the day on a computer. I hope it recovers soon.

At the contra place here, they just have people who are dancing the lead wear ties. (They bring about 15-20 ties to the dance.) I think this is a simple and handy solution.

Also, if you have never seen a girl in a floral dress circa 1980 wearing a striped tie (say, for example, my friend Lucia, now a Dominican postulant in New Zealand), it is a sight to behold.
