- [livejournal.com profile] marchek's birthday was lovely, even if I was wearing the utterly wrong color shirt for the in-progress Mal costume. That's cool -- easy to solve and I even found out the deal with the braces. So hey, that was easy.

- Meanwhile, however, I was subject to bad dance etiquette like crazy last night, including a woman stepping out of her own square to come over to ours to touch me without permission or dance reason, to tell me, specifically, that I shouldn't try to do, I should just watch first and it might not be so hard for me. Um, our group of friends keeps those dances dancing, and we had a child with us, and we needed to show and figure some height issue stuff. Also, mind yourself.

Later, Marci and I both had to partner her in progressive dances briefly and she was a bad dancer, although she did swing fairly correctly and had something resembling a proper ballroom hold, so we were both satisfied and had our suspicions confirmed about her shit.

The other thing, was a guy who refused to let go of me when he needed to for a pass through, and when I tried to separate myself from him to do the figure correctly, he grabbed me tighter and then tried to DANCE ME OUT OF THE SET, at which point, I elbowed him in the gut. All I got was a condescending look of pity in response, like I didn't know what a woman's for (trust me, asshole, I know what a woman's for, thanks). Later, when we'd danced up and down so I had to partner the guy again, he started trying to rub my back soothingly.

It's a goddamn wonder I didn't punch somebody.

- LJ Idol in a bit.

- So with Gallifrey karaoke in mind, I'm listening to things on repeat on my ipod. You know, I think I only ever knew the first verse of Anything Goes. Wow, does that song have some absurd lyrics. Tennis pros? What? But yeah, as awesome for my voice as I think, especially if I can (and I know I can, I just have to practice) get that one really bitchy high note in under my break (I have a very pretty, perfectly decent little soprano headvoice that I sort of have no use for).

Meanwhile, this arrangement of I Know Him So Well from the new Barrowman album? Is remarkably not more ridiculous than the original particularly. I'm trying to figure out if there's a weird arrangement change in one part though -- the song is strange, but I can't decide if that's a "oh, yeah that note was always not what I expected" or if it's a "heh, couldn't hit that, eh?" thing. I'll have to dig out my Chess CD. It's niggling at me. Also, wow, I forgot what a toxic, cynical song that is. It's sort of less gross with a guy singing it, which actually makes it even worse because hello, terrible gender expectations!

- Lots of work today, dropping in on Patty's departmental party tonight and seeing [livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner's The Klezmer Nutcracker tomorrow morning.

Oh ew. Was that the old dude in the beret?

Klezmer Nutcracker - I have never heard of such a thing before but it sounds like a great combo.

Yes, that was the old dude in the beret, and it's been a long time since I've felt that aghast and sort of violated in the way complete strangers can be proprietary.

Meanwhile The Klezmer Nutcracker is this crazy thing Ellen's done in the sense that it's been a radio special, an album, a book, a performance piece and now a stage play. It just keeps morphing.

Speaking of Mal, I belive that's one of his favorite things to do at a dance. :)

I know! And I'm not even playing it up for humour value. The woman I was just feeling spiteful at, rude as she was, the guy totally deserved it.

I had my own weird moment last night as well. I think his name is Ian, thin guy, shave head or just really short hair and used to have huge glasses which he was not wearing last night. He's always at barn dance and I thought he was a relatively decent guy and not a terrible dancer but he made some weird comments last night. He asked me if my husband was there tonight, whether he danced or would ever come because he would like to meet him. And then proceeded to ask me if I remembered his friend, some guy named Ben. Fortunately Dave started calling the dance and I didn't really have to respond but all I could think was WTF?

This is probably why when I go to swing and we're having a blues dance lesson they give a brief overview of where your hands go if you're leading and tell us that the first rule of blues dancing is "don't be skeevy".

Nice. *eyeroll*

Who the hell tries to give a back rub to a person who has already planted an elbow in the midsection? Forget manners, that’s somebody lacking basic survival instincts.

And yet, you could have claimed it was in keeping with the costume. He wasn't dressed up like some piece of Alliance luh-suh by any chance, was he?

Edit for icon change. Because, you know, topical.

Okay. That might have been acceptable under different circumstances (the Master's evil crew on the Valiant, maybe), but yeah. He's lucky he came out of that shindig with teeth.

Also, I must inform you that my friend [livejournal.com profile] shipchan showed up in a hawaiian shirt carrying plastic dinosaurs. Also, our Jayne was a small child, age 7 or 8. His mom dressed up as Inara.

It was really fucked up.

I spend a lot of time wishing my mother wasn't allergic to wool so that I could make her knit me a Jayne hat.

God, you're making me nostalgic now. Really, really nostalgic. GAH.

From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Does the nostalgia possibly involve knowing where any of the good Firefly slash is. I can't find anything worth reading (Mal/Wash, Mal/Simon, random threesomes adding the various girls into that all appreciated. I adore Jayne, but not in a looking for porn way yet)

Not offhand. I know I read a really great Jack Harkness on Serenity piece that shipped Jack/Mal, but it was ages ago.

I may look around tonight and see what I can find. It's possible I've got some links tucked away.

Sadly, the pairings I found most credible on the show were all het. Hm.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Agreed. And it doesn't help how everyone on the show other than Wash and Zoey are all on about how they're not getting any.

That said, I can squint and talk myself into a few slash pairings (although the stuff I've read, people weren't working hard enough to make it plausible, and I like stuff to make sense to me beyond the pretty). The threesomes/moresomes are actually easier to justify in my mind than plain ol' slash pairings (because seriously, Wash and Zoe take drunken, ill-advised pity on Mal -- that's funny).

Yeah, it's really troublesome. Plus, Wash and Zoey made me happy, so I don't want to mess with that.

I could see Inara/Kaylee maybe once or twice. Or maybe vicious dominance moments with Mal/Jayne, but that too requires squinting.

That hat is absurdly cunning. And you were right about the outfit coming together in spite of the shirt color. Still, Jack shirt...

From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
I know. I'm thrilled about the shirt. (and the pants are pretty rad, but so tight. LIke not comfortable tight, but they still so cool). And solving the rest of the Mal outfit is positively easy (you know the braces are Israeli military?) compared to the Jack coat nightmare.
