marchek's birthday was lovely, even if I was wearing the utterly wrong color shirt for the in-progress Mal costume. That's cool -- easy to solve and I even found out the deal with the braces. So hey, that was easy.
- Meanwhile, however, I was subject to bad dance etiquette like crazy last night, including a woman stepping out of her own square to come over to ours to touch me without permission or dance reason, to tell me, specifically, that I shouldn't try to do, I should just watch first and it might not be so hard for me. Um, our group of friends keeps those dances dancing, and we had a child with us, and we needed to show and figure some height issue stuff. Also, mind yourself.
Later, Marci and I both had to partner her in progressive dances briefly and she was a bad dancer, although she did swing fairly correctly and had something resembling a proper ballroom hold, so we were both satisfied and had our suspicions confirmed about her shit.
The other thing, was a guy who refused to let go of me when he needed to for a pass through, and when I tried to separate myself from him to do the figure correctly, he grabbed me tighter and then tried to DANCE ME OUT OF THE SET, at which point, I elbowed him in the gut. All I got was a condescending look of pity in response, like I didn't know what a woman's for (trust me, asshole, I know what a woman's for, thanks). Later, when we'd danced up and down so I had to partner the guy again, he started trying to rub my back soothingly.
It's a goddamn wonder I didn't punch somebody.
- LJ Idol in a bit.
- So with Gallifrey karaoke in mind, I'm listening to things on repeat on my ipod. You know, I think I only ever knew the first verse of Anything Goes. Wow, does that song have some absurd lyrics. Tennis pros? What? But yeah, as awesome for my voice as I think, especially if I can (and I know I can, I just have to practice) get that one really bitchy high note in under my break (I have a very pretty, perfectly decent little soprano headvoice that I sort of have no use for).
Meanwhile, this arrangement of I Know Him So Well from the new Barrowman album? Is remarkably not more ridiculous than the original particularly. I'm trying to figure out if there's a weird arrangement change in one part though -- the song is strange, but I can't decide if that's a "oh, yeah that note was always not what I expected" or if it's a "heh, couldn't hit that, eh?" thing. I'll have to dig out my Chess CD. It's niggling at me. Also, wow, I forgot what a toxic, cynical song that is. It's sort of less gross with a guy singing it, which actually makes it even worse because hello, terrible gender expectations!
- Lots of work today, dropping in on Patty's departmental party tonight and seeing
ellen_kushner's The Klezmer Nutcracker tomorrow morning.

Date: 2008-12-12 05:44 pm (UTC)This is probably why when I go to swing and we're having a blues dance lesson they give a brief overview of where your hands go if you're leading and tell us that the first rule of blues dancing is "don't be skeevy".

Date: 2008-12-12 07:24 pm (UTC)Nice. *eyeroll*
Who the hell tries to give a back rub to a person who has already planted an elbow in the midsection? Forget manners, that’s somebody lacking basic survival instincts.

Edit for icon change. Because, you know, topical.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:12 pm (UTC)That said, I can squint and talk myself into a few slash pairings (although the stuff I've read, people weren't working hard enough to make it plausible, and I like stuff to make sense to me beyond the pretty). The threesomes/moresomes are actually easier to justify in my mind than plain ol' slash pairings (because seriously, Wash and Zoe take drunken, ill-advised pity on Mal -- that's funny).

Date: 2008-12-12 09:14 pm (UTC)I could see Inara/Kaylee maybe once or twice. Or maybe vicious dominance moments with Mal/Jayne, but that too requires squinting.
