WE HAVE ANOTHER GODDAMN LEAK

(ETA: well-intentioned as you surely are, please do not tell us to move when you are unaware of the financial and logistical obstacles to us doing so, including having no one who makes 70x the annual rent of an apartment to guarantee the place).

Time to move. If the landlord isn't attempting to practice prevention of these problems as they make themselves increasingly apparent, then things aren't going to get any better.

This is the funniest thing anyone has said to me in ages. It really helped this morning.

Wow! I hope someone can come out soon and make it stop.

Oh noes. Still, I suppose it forces the super to be on his/her toes - sounds like it might be a broader problem with the building's plumbing?

Heating system again?

Moving in NYC is a whole different animal than most places.

Yeah and this time it opened up a plaster bubble of nasty water RIGHT OVER OUR BED.

yuck! Oh, I so sorry. This happened to us while pregnant, I hope your situation is resolved MUCH faster.

Yuck to plaster bubbles of nastiness. I had those last winter when a pipe burst over my living room. I kept wanting to poke them with a chopstick. That was not a fun night. I had to throw away books(books!).

Good luck with the situation. This kind of stuff always sucks.

Yuck!

You probably don't have a lot of alternate bed locations.

I'm envisioning a funnel attached to a long hose which runs to the doorstep of your landlord.

I like this one :)

Hopefully none of your own stuff is getting ruined??

Nope, we've been lucky and quick.

Yeah, I suspect that if moving were an option you would've considered it by now... I hope they get this straightened out soon.

We have occasional leaks in our house because of some roof issues and eaves that need replacing. This stresses me out terribly for (I think) obvious reasons. One night, I think to get me to chill out and go to sleep, Joe looked at me and was like, "Hey, you like caves, right?"

Me: "Yeah."
Him: "And you know that caves with living rock have flowing water."
Me: "Yeah."
Him: "And you know how you're always talking about how houses are basically just cleaner, people-made caves..."

Yeah.

That's very sweet, and quite a bit like the logic we try to use with each other.

Oh yeah. It's terrible logic, but well-intentioned bad logic and it worked.

Now whenever I see dripping I make myself think "cave, cave, cave..." and dig out the bucket.

70x the rent??? Around here that would be something like $1.5 million -- anyone who made that wouldn't be renting an apartment in the first place. I thought the standard was about triple?

Er, I did mean monthly. But basically, even if I make less than 100K (which we do) for a 2K/month place, we need a guarantor with a provable income of 140K/per anum. My parents are retired. It's not an option.

Ah -- whose annual income is 70x the monthly rent. OK. Still steep (triple monthly = 36x annual) but not so ludicrous.
