  • I dropped the cat off for surgery this morning. The vet just called me and said the labs came back and they now think the stone is dissolvable. The problem is that sometimes cats have mixed stones that may or may not dissolve entirely. So now they want to wait on surgery and have me discuss it with the senior vet on Wednesday. This is potentially good and potentially bad. Cheaper if we don't go in and they dissolve; more expensive over time if we try disolving and it doesn't work, or we do an ultrasound to see the stone position and then decide to do surgery. The constant gamble of money and cat health here is exhausting me. I asked them to board Little for two days (which they are doing at no charge) so they can watch her as we wait to make sure she doesn't obstruct and to be sure she gets her full dose of medication. I'll meet with the other vet Wednesday to make a decision. I love that these folks are so conscientious, BUT I AM LOSING MY MIND HERE. Also, Kitty!

  • Meanwhile, saw my dad yesterday. It's hard to know when he's crazy or if he's senile; when he's experiencing serious illness or being a hypochondriac. After all, most of my childhood was punctuated by him threatening to throw himself under a bus for various reasons.

Among other things, yeserday, my father sent me on an errand to buy a product at a health food store earlier today for the sprain he's convinced he has in his leg. Problems with this theory:

    1. the store was not called what he thought
    2. the store was not where he thought
    3. the store did not have the product in stock, despite his certainty that they had told my mother they did
    4. Sprains involve swelling. There's no swelling.
    5. But the really, really best part? The part where he rips pages out
of health food books so my mom can buy him random products like
"oxygen pills". This CAN'T be good. I'm all for alternative medicine, but I feel like we're one step away from colloidal silver here, folks.

  • Have not heard further from Patty, hoping for news and contact info soon.

  • I finally just decided to see what the fuck Kings is about. It's either going to be awesome or awful but seems like it might be a fun subject for criticism. I mean, I can't even process this insanity yet. The Biblical story of David, set in modern times, filmed in NYC and just rife with ridiculous militaria? Oh yeah, and there's a random gay subplot (that might, in fact, be really awful, lame queering of the villain from rumours I've heard). Seriously. Who pitched this shit? Because they are a genius, but very, very scary. http://www.kings2009.com

Is it possible to give your father placebos to the pills he swears he needs? We did that finally with my granddad, but your father seems like he might be far too intelligent to accept that.

Best wishes for kitty .. very nervewracking decisions for you.

I hate those kinds of decisions - I always wish the vet would just give me one thing to do, and do it. It's good that they're being thorough, though.

I'm sorry things are such a mess with your father too. Of course everything has to happen at once. At least he's not going for colloidal silver, since there's nothing like having family members turn blue...

And as if you don't already have enough - *hugs*.

I am actually going to attempt to go to fencing tonight. Because I've got to get back on with that.

If it makes you feel any better for the past seven years my father has worn two bracelets, a necklace, and a knee brace full of "special" magnets and enthusiastically promotes them to everyone he meets.

Oh dear. I mean, NY-as-a-film-set, but they were filming "Kings" in my nabe and I had no idea it was quite *that* insane. (All credit to their marketing department, though. I was persuaded by their random PSA-esque posters to see what the heck was going on, but I zoned out more or less at "...oh, another TV show. *sigh*")

/eta: Ian McShane could be good as a modern-day mad-bad-and-dangerous King Saul, I suppose. And Teh Ghey subplot could be the canonical David/Jonathan?

Apparently not, unless they are hiding it well, and they've cast someone as Jonathan's bf, apparently.

Oh, bleh all around! It's good that the vet is being thorough and not just putting her through surgery when she could just pass the thing, but yeah, it's a gamble. Not to mention stressful waiting to learn the outcome. *crosses fingers for Little and your bank account*

I wonder if some older men are just naturally prone to that sort of thing. I have a friend whose dad has become a total metrosexual in his late 60s/early 70s, and he sends her out all the time to buy him whatever fab personal care product he's seen on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (no, I'm not kidding).

I hope Patty's well and getting settled at the dig. Good luck weathering the chaos and recovering from the holi-daze!

What little I've heard about KINGS says it's dreadful, but I've got to be curious about anything with Ian McShane.

God next thing you know your dad will be buying an Orgone box. I don't know much about Kings but the idea looks sort of interesting. Oh well, at least TV is weird enough, I guess.

Sorry, shouldn't laugh, but the oxygen pills reminds me of when my father-in-law called me all excited and told me-- in depth-- about his "colon cleanse"-- a coffee enema. I really needed to hear all that!

Aww...I hope your kitty cat gets better soon. It's a good thing that they told you that she might not need surgery. That means that they're not going to do unnecessary surgery, which is good for both your cat and your checkbook. :)

After lurking a bit, I've bitten the bullet and friended both you and [livejournal.com profile] kalichan. I love reading what you have say on fandom (and of course your fic!), but also RL, fannishness, and cats. Like I told her, no need to friend back, though it is, of course, very welcome!

Also, a big get well to your cat!
