I have food issues. Specifically, celiac disease.

I do not have "food issues".

Air quotes, even textual ones, are rude.

heh I was just having this problem today. I hate to call rank on people, but I do think I have a little more of a right to pitch a fit about food arrangements then a Vegan, especially if said Vegan is being quite a bit more rude about it. It's just not the same shit.

Well I'm referring to a certain email in a certain group. I was going to say something and then I was like, "I'm not going to this damn dinner anyway."

I think we're on the same page, boss. Now I'm getting the 'there will be meat' email, which doesn't really help as I'm sure everything will be breaded. If they can't figure anything out I'll probably not go because I really can't afford a $40 salad.

I don't think "issues" is the word I'd use.

Date: 2009-02-19 12:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stardragonca.livejournal.com
It certainly isn't. 'Issues' means having, say, complicated feelings about a blood relation, not 'If I ingest a certain protein my body will try to eat itself.'
There is a certain class of words I might use in reference to someone who gives so little thought to what things mean before uttering them, but the person so addressed might have issues with my language.

Air quotes, in any form, are rude, and more than a little passe.
Take the moral high ground *g*

I, on the other hand, had peanut butter toast and a giant lemon tart for breakfast ...
I think I actually need to acquire some food issues.

Dude, that's so me it's hilarious.

I think of all the celiac things I miss the most it's lemon tarts. I should get on doing a gluten-free version.

So I went to wikipedia because I keep forgetting what exactly celiac disease is (and I've looked before). And I'm skimming through when I get to "Roman Catholic position" and am just baffled by what the context of that header is. Turns out there's this whole issue over what's a valid eucharist and that you can't be a priest if you have the disease because you can't have the official eucharist. Some days, I learn very random things.

That said, I'd be vaguely irritated, myself, with the air quotes. I'd apply "food issues" to something like...I don't know, not liking green vegetables. In that realm.

Also, gluten seems like one of those things that are hidden in lots of foods I don't think about. For example, I have a friend that can't have eggs (and dammit, there's a term for it, and I can't remember it), and they're hidden in EVERYTHING. Like, things I'd never think to ask about.

Gluten is sneaky.

And yes, the Catholic Church feels that since transubstantiation means you are consuming the body of Christ one should not be harmed from the gluten in the communion wafer. Those who cannot consume gluten are to be viewed with suspicion if trying to enter the priesthood.

Off topic. Have you read any of the writings of Don DeLillo? I could not help thinking of you when I was reading a book he wrote in 2001 called The Body Artist .

Yup, pretty much. I work closely with the public and I can't even begin to tell you how many times that I've been forced to apologize to perfume-wearing customers when I'm sent into an uncontrollable coughing fit.

I've even lost a couple of customers over the years when, after a few visits and coughing fits, I finally (politely) ask them if they could please forgo the perfume on the day of their appointment. You wouldn't believe how offended people get. It's like I insulted their race or something equally as unforgivable. Meanwhile, my eyes are burning, my throat is closing up, and my bronchioles are trying their best to reject the offending chemical.

or another one being, 'but you are still breathing.'

Yes... allergic reactions occur in many ways, one of them being the throat closing up.

*gives you a gentle stick for future stabbings.* Hope the edit for your novel is going okay btw- sorry have not been on the net much.

I think years of obsessively watching "Say Anything" encouraged my bad habit use of air quotes. I do it to be sarcastic, but I'm not sure anyone "gets" that I'm sarcastic. ;)

people suck sometimes

i don't have celiac, but i have thyroid/adrenal issues which means no real carbs (wheat, rice, soy, potatoes, beans, etc) - restaurants are "fun"

and on that note, while at d*c we try to organize a trip offsite to http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/ - the one in little five points

they'll happily serve the most amazing burgers i've had sans bread or other things you can't have

if you and any of your friends are interested i'll be making a post or two closer to d*c about it; we usually get a couple of the huge taxis and take over their patio room with intelligent freaks, and they've always treated us very very well
