I, on the other hand, had peanut butter toast and a giant lemon tart for breakfast ...
I think I actually need to acquire some food issues.

Date: 2009-02-18 11:50 pm (UTC)That said, I'd be vaguely irritated, myself, with the air quotes. I'd apply "food issues" to something like...I don't know, not liking green vegetables. In that realm.
Also, gluten seems like one of those things that are hidden in lots of foods I don't think about. For example, I have a friend that can't have eggs (and dammit, there's a term for it, and I can't remember it), and they're hidden in EVERYTHING. Like, things I'd never think to ask about.

Those who cannot consume gluten are to be viewed with suspicion if trying to enter the priesthood.

Date: 2009-02-19 12:26 am (UTC)Off topic. Have you read any of the writings of Don DeLillo? I could not help thinking of you when I was reading a book he wrote in 2001 called The Body Artist .
Re: I believe
Date: 2009-02-19 03:09 am (UTC)Yup, pretty much. I work closely with the public and I can't even begin to tell you how many times that I've been forced to apologize to perfume-wearing customers when I'm sent into an uncontrollable coughing fit.
I've even lost a couple of customers over the years when, after a few visits and coughing fits, I finally (politely) ask them if they could please forgo the perfume on the day of their appointment. You wouldn't believe how offended people get. It's like I insulted their race or something equally as unforgivable. Meanwhile, my eyes are burning, my throat is closing up, and my bronchioles are trying their best to reject the offending chemical.

Yes... allergic reactions occur in many ways, one of them being the throat closing up.
*gives you a gentle stick for future stabbings.* Hope the edit for your novel is going okay btw- sorry have not been on the net much.

Date: 2009-02-19 10:44 am (UTC)i don't have celiac, but i have thyroid/adrenal issues which means no real carbs (wheat, rice, soy, potatoes, beans, etc) - restaurants are "fun"
and on that note, while at d*c we try to organize a trip offsite to http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/ - the one in little five points
they'll happily serve the most amazing burgers i've had sans bread or other things you can't have
if you and any of your friends are interested i'll be making a post or two closer to d*c about it; we usually get a couple of the huge taxis and take over their patio room with intelligent freaks, and they've always treated us very very well
