Vermont legalizes gay marriage

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage -- and the first to do so with a legislature's vote.
The Legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.

Date: 2009-04-07 05:47 pm (UTC)I think Vermont changes a lot by having such a weird mix of liberals and conservatives and being a legislature vote that overroad the governor.
I think DC changes a lot in recognizing the marriages in other states, because DC is almost entirely African-American, and that might help people not make the CA Prop 8 blame discussion about race.
