  • Went to Starbucks for the gluten-free cake again. They were morons, didn't think they had it at first (it's in the display case), then tried to serve me an unwraped one from the display case, then got offended when I explained that wasn't correct and basically forced me to get stared at by a whole bunch of people who don't need to eat cripple food, when I explained THAT FOR MEDICAL REASONS, they were never supposed to serve this cake unwrapped and that's the official policy of Starbucks nationally. It sucked.

  • BUT THEN, I walked by Mozarelli's which is a place with gluten-free pizza and cake that I don't go to a lot as they use a lot of high-fiber flours that don't always agree with me, and they are now carrying a new massive line of gluten-free cooks called "My Dad's Cookies" and THEY ARE HEAVEN. Rasperberry linzer torte slices, french cream-filled pastries, chocolate-covered graham crackers. http://www.mydadscookies.com -- apparently online ordering will be possible soon.

  • Meanwhile is there anyone in NYC with an interest in going in on a British food order with me? The base shipping is high (like upwards of 20 pounds), but only goes up incrementally with amount of stuff ordered. We could get more bang for our buck if a few of us ordered things together. I'm ordering for gluten-free naan and various biscuits and such. But they have regular obscure Brit foods too.

Chocolate-covered gr'amies are my favourite. I'm glad that you can have some sweet when you want to. Sorry about the stupid.

I'd be willing to go in. Brits make the only granola bars, cookies, and crisps I can eat without fear of soy poisoning.

I wish I were closer, I'd go in for Branston Pickle. No one seems to import it into the states. :(

I ordered Soy Ice cream from a parlor when I was in Florida in February, and got not only weird stares from the folks behind the counter, but one of them said "Are you sure you don't want real ice cream? This stuff tastes like crap." I said that I was lactose intolerant and would love it if he'd scoop me up some soy ice cream so that I could enjoy a cone with my family. Huge eyeroll and sigh. Whatever.

That's so bogus. If they *have* soy ice cream and you ask for it, they should just, you know, SERVE IT TO YOU.

    Geesh.

If I were in NYC I'd be all over the British food order! Even though I shouldn't. They have M&S biscuits, though. My weakness.

I wish celiac disease was better understood. When in India, once, a woman I traveled with had cd and I recall a very lengthy back and forth in a rest stop on the way to the Taj Mahal about how she could not have bread with her eggs and they brought out the bread anyway, touching the eggs, and the servers got angry when she sent it back, because they didn't understand why she couldn't just leave the bread.

    Sigh.

I wonder if Myer's of Keswick could get you those things you want to order — do you know about them? Probably you do.

That's a good point. I could try contacting the British food stores here and seeing what they can do for me. It's such a weird, specific thing.

Myers' (and Carry on Tea and Sympathy, in the same neighborhood) tend not to have as wide a range of stuff in my experience, certainly not of the gluten-free variety. Worth asking though.

It's worth a try before you go to the expense of making a big order yourself. Their wholesaler may be able to get it if you agree to buy a whole box or whatever.

Yes, this. Myers is FAB for all your Britfood needs. Or at least most of them. Plus they have a store-cat.

I'm about as far from New York as you can get in the US and not be in Hawaii, but what *I* would like to go in on is an order for that French GF puff pastry. Shipping on amounts I can afford make it prohibitively expensive.

Is what you want not available from import shops? Or aren't there any good ones in NYC?

I ask because I live in LA and we have tons of places where I can get brit-food. I visited a friend in Wales a three years ago and she got me hooked on *real* Cadbury's chocolate. Thankfully I can get it from Cost Plus Market as well as several small import shops.

What is it about starbucks anyway? A year or so ago I was at a newly opened one, and saw a sandwich... I asked the girl at the counter what was in it and in the ensuing conversation it turned out that a) she had no idea b) the sandwich was not labeled with its ingredients c) she refused to go look it up or find where it was listed and d) I was being incredibly picky and unreasonable [for trying to find out if it had mustard or mayonnaise in it!]. I was so annoyed I went online later and found the county food & health agency and reported them b/c by california law you must provide a list of ingredients in food items, whether you are a grocery or restaurant. It got me a bunch of coupons for free coffee and other apologies. Meh.

Oh, Starbucks. I know they're considered quality coffee in benighted parts of the country, but please.

And corporations just generally suck. It's inherent in some ways.
