  • Last night the cab I was in got pulled over my cops. You'd think they'd tell a passenger what to do, or acknowledge the woman they are dumping out on the road at 3:20am in some way because of whatever drama is up, but no, nothing. I just sort of wandered off.

  • Lovely blissful morning domestic, followed by ridiculous professional stressors. All now appears fine.

  • Very pleased to hear that one of the tidbits of actual insight from Torchsong was JB saying that (paraphrasing) "Jack is the Doctor's Ianto". I like being right about things.

  • I'm seriously hacked off about this shooting at the Holocaust Museum, and hope to have the energy to talk cogently about it later, although, what is there to say?

  • I feel sort of bummed that I pretty much can't send that photo [livejournal.com profile] sykii took of me to my parents, but they keep waiting for more shoes to drop in terms of my sexuality and gender identity and being a big ol' freak, and things like that alarm them.

  • Buds on multiple tomato plants now, so hopefully new tomatoes growing soon. The first zebra tomato will probably be ready to eat this weekend.

Buds on the pepper plant are opening, but no peppers yet.

There's been some animal interaction with the plants again -- an attack on the lavender has me worried for it, and something went after the dirt in the zebra tomato, but everything seems to be hanging in okay.

    The basil 2.0 is thriving.
  • I like being right about things.

    Wow, they need more shoes.
It's official, your folks don't get you, or appreciate you at all.
    Accept it thus.

JB saying that (paraphrasing) "Jack is the Doctor's Ianto".

I KNEW the Doctor and Jack were doing it.

he did, indeed, say that (gareth's face was kind of hilarious when he said it, too)

I've always seen it that way -- not in terms of sex or romance, but in terms of devotion and role model stuff. I felt very vindicated when I read that.

    "Jack is the Doctor's Ianto".

I can see where he's coming from, actually.

I wonder if it could be said with any certainty that he's a Ianto to both Ten and Nine, or is he more specifically Ianto-ish around Ten?

Anyway. *facepalm* about the cops. Sounds like you got lucky in being able to get home safely. (Did you get any impression of what they hauled the cabbie in for?)

Sadness re [livejournal.com profile] sykii's photo and your not being able to show it to your family: it is *very* you.

    Hope for the veggies!

Well, I think the evolution is similar. Because S1 Jack is scary the way Nine is scary. And then S2 Jack there's a lot more equilibrium there just as Jack has with Ten (although in a different way).

nothing to do with sex (a bit love, maybe, but mostly hero worship and the leader/follower dynamic)

I'm probably going to regret asking this, but as I'm largely disconnected from fannish communities (as opposed to fic communities), what was the wankery surrounding Torchsong? Feel free to sum-up Inigo-style, as linking would probably give it further publicity..

Also, I'm very pleased with Jack-as-Ianto image. For me personally, that works much more for Nine/Who!Jack as a dynamic than it does for Ten/TW!Jack, as he seems to be much more on an equal footing (though, perhaps, not cognizant entirely of that until LotTL?) Definitely worth more thought. :D

(And my brain is now piping up, to what extent does Ianto gain equality/power in his relationship to Jack? TWS2 is *huge* growth and development for him, but I think there's still a very strong disequilibrium at the end of it, that isn't present between Jack and Ten...)

Well, there's always going to be disequalibrium in any relationship Jack has with a mortal human. I think Ianto's doing ap rety good job, considering.

    Wank about Torchsong:
    - organizational problems
    - a series of very unfortunate personal events that led to guest cancellations
    - issues about status, privacy, privilege and "secrets" as referenced in my post about patronage yesterday.
    - wank about anyone discussing any of these things because having opinions and articulating them cogently is frowned upon in this fandom. Someone actually called me "literate" as an insult.

    Yes. Yes.

We even see Jack make tea for the Doctor in "The Sound of Drums", if I'm not mistaken. (But he puts his thumb in it when he carries it over to him, which is just so goofy and yet so Jack.)

Oh, agreed completely - and while Jack's age & immortality superpower would certainly put any standard human at disadvantage, I suppose I was thinking more specifically about Ianto's personality-type - he's definitely content to be beta, rather than asserting himself directly contra to Jack - setting for the jewel, butler personality, or however you want to describe it. it's an entirely different sort of strength, and (credit to GDL) much harder to bring across onscreen, and I think he does an amazing job of it.

Jack, even with Nine, was never content to be background or "support" in quite the same way - he's just too big personality-wise. I actually think, horror of horrors, he might be as equivalent to Gwen as to Ianto. (And now I'm going to stuff that image back in a drawer and never look at it again.)

Re wankery: I suspected your post on patronage was probably about 6 times more interesting - has made me rethink some relationships in my own life. Glad to know I was correct in that assumption.

GDL is a great actor. I wish he was directed with more consistency in TW, but what can you do?

Anyway... I think you hit the nail on teh head. Ianto is comfortable being the behind the scenes guy. He's not waiting to have a different role. He's doing what suits him. Jack, with the Doctor, is struggling with what role he wants and is good at and all that. Ten knows how to give Jack room and also stay in charge of shit. Nine just made it really awkward and Jack was so into play acting that more beta role to him, I don't think he ever noticed what a mess that would eventually make, had he and Nine and Rose not been separated for other reasons. Nine was perfectly clear on the potential mess though, which was convenient to his own neuroses.

Yeah, and in "Utopia" Jack takes the Doctor's coat. The best thing about this, if you listen to the commentary, is that apparently John Barrowman actually insisted on that detail -- it wasn't actually in RTD's original script. :)
