The past was neither dim nor drab.
100-year-old color photos (yes, color, not hand-tinted).

[livejournal.com profile] fixed_air is having a poll and discussion about abortion on her journal. What's interesting is how civilized the discussion is. We had a long conversation about the internalized sexism of how she framed parts of the poll, and the whole thing is sort of worth taking a look at. No one is trying to change anyone's mind, but people really seem interested in listening.

Do not go over there in a desire for conflict. That's not the point, and I'll be displeased.

Lady, is it a revolution already?

I'll be displeased.

Anyone who would intentionally make you mad would be very Not Smart indeed.

Thanks for the link. I love reading discussions like this one, and your comments in particular make me feel oddly empowered. Mind if I fangirl you a little? :)

there's a larger set of Prokudin Gorsky's photos on the Library of Congress website. I'm not sure if the article links to in, but it's part of a searchable online database that they have.

That last link is so inspiring, and I just..wow. There's nothing I can say to it, I just teared up reading it.
It's really amazing to see things like that.

Thanks for the pointer at the poll. Will take a look at later.

And I've seen those photos before - they are staggeringly beautiful! It's almost eerie to see period images in such modern presentation.

I think the Library of Congress has some of these online - can't remember whether it's the same ones or additional, but definitely the same photographer.

...and required three to tell my story. Don't know if she'll unscreen it, but I think I ended up learning a lot about myself in the writing of it.

Thanks for the link.

I'm flabbergasted that the colors in the first photo, in particular, have held up as well as they have; most color movies last perhaps 15 years before color fading.
