I should do proper write-ups of all the tie-in material I've been devouring this week later, but for now, today's radio play .

OMG, that speech (which, um, sort of made me cry).
OMG, Jack delcaring his feelings.
OMG, this makes me sooooooooooooo nervous about CoE.

Yeah, my reaction on all three counts. Also, JB's comments in the interview that went out yesterday.

This is one case where I'd rather be wrong as a writer.

The how people are disposable comments or something else? (those comments actually made me less worried -- I think people will choose Torchwood family over biological in the show).

I do think if Jack and Ianto said this stuff in the radio play, we're getting an ILU in the show, which is all well and good until fannish squeeing makes me go deaf.

(Also, my gf laughs in her sleep, all the time, so that's part of why Ianto's speech fucked me up)

Also? wow, hi gay romance without a sad ending or a long explanation about the fact that these two men are together. American programming isn't like that.

Yeah, the disposable comment, and the hint at a "big one." I hope you're right about TW over bio family, I really do. But someone's gotta be the toast du jour, I fear.

Ianto watching Jack sleep: canon confirmation that Jack DOES sleep, maybe best when he has his blanket buddy, and fuck if that doesn't make me PUDDLE.

God, I love this show. And GDL is a much better voice actor than I'd have expected (and JB a worse). Gwen/Rhys is pure love.

Rhys. I'm telling you. Gwen chooses her baby and Torchwood over Rhys.

weirdly, last night I had a bunny for a really short piece that Ianto's whole shit about watching Jack sleep really works for, so I'm going to try to wite it later.

DO EET!

Lordy, we're gagging for new canon, aren't we?

Yeah, Rhys with anchovies on toast is the best we can hope for? Ugh. But I wouldn't really object to having a new OT3, if that's the case.

OH I wlll, but it's my first day off in ages around here -- so lots of time with the gf today, and I have to work on my West Wing fic later, but I'll probably bang this out briefly when we get home this evening or tomorrow.

Sorry,Query again.

OH OH, was it good? Now I have to listen. I fell asleep listening to the first 2 last night. CRAP. Off to listen...

It's like everything you never thought the show would do. Also thank god GDL can act.

Also, seriously, does Ianto think Jack's going to run off with the Doctor again?

Date: 2009-07-03 03:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fmanalyst.livejournal.com
I think he probably does. I suspect that running in the back of his mind is the question, "What is there here to keep you if He needs you somewhere else?"

From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Sure, but Jack came back after the whole Journey's End thing. Surely Ianto's over the ex-bf drama factor... and yet, no.

Do people ever truly get over that sort of thing, esp. when there is a significant past catalog and age difference? I was with an older guy for awhile who had some well-known exes. You'd certainly recognize their names. It can be hard to see one's own value in that situation. Of course, I could just be projecting, since he and I haven't been together in years. But I do sometimes think that the only interesting thing about my love life is that I once slept with a guy who slept with __________ and __________ and no doubt suffered in the comparison with them.

From: [identity profile] neifile7.livejournal.com
Well, not much can compete with the blue box. And the more Ianto knows about the Doctor, the more he must seem like Jack's ideal match (not just his idealized ex).

Yes! Somewhere being anywhere in the entire Universe, at any point in its entire history.
I would always be expecting to turn around and finding my BF suddenly gone.
I wouldn't want to, but I would...

Torchwood/Dr. Who/Sarah Jane commentary. Mostly quite good. Here: http://www.behindthesofa.org.uk/

I find it useful for not missing things that I should be torrenting.

I just finished listening to it.

Damn it.

I'm crying and my GF is giving me dirty looks because I exclaimed loudly: "Oh God! He's going to die!"....

Though reading your discussions give me hope that no... no he might not.

Oh that speech and the final lines! Guh!

I have to say, when I heard that there was gonna be a bedside vigil speech, I was worried. I mean, major opportunity for sentimental garbage. But it wasn't! It was chilling, effective writing. And perfect Ianto characterization that understands what he would and would not say. And GDL played it perfectly. Not too much, not too little.

But yeah - worried. :(

Seriously, having seen the text written out, it's kinda meh (although smart enough about the character, thank god). GDL sold it, and I can't bleieve the radio director just let that much of a really, really, slow restrained monologue go on and on and on.

Wow. Each of the radio plays has been a bit better than the previous one, and this was very very good. And, my god, Ianto. And Jack. I think I cried a little.

So, that kinda made me really happy. I'm not sure that we can extrapolate too much about CoE from it though (I'm back in "rational" mode again -- probably in a few hours I'll have another "OMG HE'S GONNA DIE" moment). We already know that there's going to be J/I development, including some sort of recognition of Jack's feelings in the new episodes, and Ianto's statement about how he's likely to die before he gets old really applies across the board.

How are you feeling about the retcon stuff now? I think it's pretty clear from this most recent play that Jack does let former lovers who know about Torchwood get away without it. Personally, I don't think he would retcon Gwen or Ianto if they ever chose to leave Torchwood.

Over the retcon thing, but once again in a tizzy about Ianto's survival because Kai Owen totally gave this interview that made it sound like Rhys survives and I can't believe both Rhys and Ianto come through this shit alive.

Date: 2009-07-04 09:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lefaym.livejournal.com
Yeah, I saw that too, though it's important to remember that the actors are supposed to give interviews as though their character lives. I mean, a lot of people (including myself) didn't believe the spoilers about Owen and Tosh for S2 becasue they'd both given interviews where they talked about doing S3, so really we can't count the interviews with GDL and Kai Owen very much either way -- GDL's langauge in his Digital Spy gives me hope -- he actually talks about Ianto in future tense, and talks about Ianto's story arc as one of becoming and beginnings (sorry if I'm just repeating stuff I've said at TWU here) -- which makes me feel like he's probably okay for CoE, but doomed in S4.

Ah well, in a week we will know for sure.
