I personally kind of wonder if he's actually aiming high and only bothering asking out the girls with the super-model looks/fashion sense (I kind of hesitate in saying it directly to his journal). Admittedly I'm stereo-typing off way too much TV and have been watching far too many hours of Royal Pains (where one of the guys went to a party, only bothered with the supermodel girls and was surprised when each of them turned him down when he mentioned he was unemployed and drove a used car). If he is, I'd mark him as shallow anyway.
Now, the ones who aren't so obsessed by fashion and money (like me) wouldn't bat an eye at what he does for a living. And being a librarian can actually be a turn on (I just love a guy who can discuss books and my mom would love him since she's a Lit instructor).
Women who cultivate that traditionally feminine look tend to be more invested in traditional gender roles. It's all about marketing. If you want to live in the patriarchal paradigm, you adopt the features that attract patriarchal men -- makeup, revealing clothes, compulsory thinness, and so on. Which is part of why I find femme so interesting. It's about playing with the accoutrements of regressive femininity in a feminist context.
