I'm a single male, and "librarian" "self-important douchebag" seems to be a bigger turn off to women than "unemployed" or "robber."

Fixed that for him. (And yeah, probably troll? But weird troll.)

I used to work for a big corporation that served mainly libraries. Several members of my department went to librarian conventions and the like on a sometimes monthly basis. The librarians at these conventions were generally described as, well...sorta wild.

I would have no problem dating a male librarian or a male anything else as long as we got along well and he wasn't too busy complaining about not being able to get a date to actually have a conversation with a woman.

Sounds a bit like the whackjob who shot up the gym a few weeks ago. Similar "Waaaah why don't women like me, why can't I get one?" tone.

That makes two of us. I *get* being frustrated and disappointed, really I do, but when getting to know folks, you got to be kind of zen about it.

**smack** When he's gotten his degree, maybe we can stick him in ILL or maybe book restoration. Some place where he won't embarrass the patrons. (Not cataloguing you need an imagination and intelligence to do that and with those comments, he's shown he has neither.)

As soon as he said he was a librarian, I was sure we were in for a rant about how men are discriminated against in the field of library sciences. But no, it was even better!

That's exactly what happened to me! I missed the key word "women" when it first appeared and puzzled over the whole thing till I reread it more carefully. I was all set to put up a note about male nurses... *rolls eyes*

Wow. I'm so not even bothering.

Assuming he's sincere, if he somehow isn't already hanging around with anyone who validates his (presumed) orderly geekiness or interest in wacky books,* I doubt there's hope for him.

Diagnosis: he's tuning out the people who might like his profession-related traits due to his biases about who the Cool Kids are, or else he honestly doesn't have those traits. In either case, he's best off avoiding the profession.

Oh wait, he wasn't asking about vocation, he was asking about how to get chicks. Yeah, he's excused for the day. He can come back when he's calmed down.

* I've never met a librarian or library student without either or both trait...

Yeah, it sounds like he's defining "top notch woman" as "woman who is invested in patriarchal gender norms." Those are the ones who have the big boobs, wear the makeup, cook dinner for their men, and generally perform ideal wifely duties, amirite? They demand high-status jobs in their men!

Holy Semantics Warning Signal, Batman!

From: [identity profile] perlandria.livejournal.com
The phrase 'top-notch woman' would have any of the exceptional and passes for 'normal' women I know deciding he was too shallow for them - and actually it would do the same for the also exceptional women I know who don't have that label applied to them. So either way, he loses fails.

Actually, if I weren't already married, I'd jump at the chance to date a librarian. (Imagine I put some kind of witticism about "check you out" here.)

But yeah, I think he's a troll.

I personally kind of wonder if he's actually aiming high and only bothering asking out the girls with the super-model looks/fashion sense (I kind of hesitate in saying it directly to his journal). Admittedly I'm stereo-typing off way too much TV and have been watching far too many hours of Royal Pains (where one of the guys went to a party, only bothered with the supermodel girls and was surprised when each of them turned him down when he mentioned he was unemployed and drove a used car). If he is, I'd mark him as shallow anyway.

Now, the ones who aren't so obsessed by fashion and money (like me) wouldn't bat an eye at what he does for a living. And being a librarian can actually be a turn on (I just love a guy who can discuss books and my mom would love him since she's a Lit instructor).

From: [identity profile] tacky-tramp.livejournal.com
Women who cultivate that traditionally feminine look tend to be more invested in traditional gender roles. It's all about marketing. If you want to live in the patriarchal paradigm, you adopt the features that attract patriarchal men -- makeup, revealing clothes, compulsory thinness, and so on. Which is part of why I find femme so interesting. It's about playing with the accoutrements of regressive femininity in a feminist context.

I'm just completely baffled at his post on several levels -- including the misogyny, of course. But mostly I don't understand what dimension he comes from that women don't want male librarians. My mom is a librarian and she works with several male colleagues, most of whom are happily married and have been for years. And their wives aren't all academics or other librarians, either.

I suspect his attitude and probably his readiness to comodify women is his problem.

As a male librarian, I hasten to assure you that we're not all like that; in fact, very few are like that.

From: [identity profile] tacky-tramp.livejournal.com
Not knowing and male librarians, that was my assumption! I'm more attracted to men in women-dominated fields because it suggests the possibility that they're comfortable following their passions instead of chasing whatever society says is manly.

Date: 2009-08-21 02:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] manycolored.livejournal.com
Aha, I think I have it! He's just insightful enough to realize that because he is shallow and bound by stereotyped gender roles, he needs a mate of the same description. In that game, he looks for beauty and charm; she looks for money and status. (And while I love my profession, it provides neither on a grand scale.)
