Because it's going to be a hard day.....

1. I look so fucking handsome today. Grey slacks, fabulous shirt with blue stripey pattern, waistcoat from new suit (the pinstripe color matches the pants perfectly). Oh, playing with patterns -- it's like textures for the eyes! I am learning things.

2. OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS: http://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/node/33854 (although, whether the Gatsby thing is really happening or whether that's the latest kooky Baz rumour or another thing that will go the way of his Alexander the Great project, seriously remains to be seen.) I'm not sure I'm actually capable of having and writing an idea here, because it's so weirdly personal for me. But on the other hand, I'd have to come up with something -- what it's really a matter of is coming up with someone everyone else won't come up with too (the "matters of commerce" issue is well know, and as the bizarre "traditionally female" "pin-up" way in which he treats male bodies on screen. On the other hand, I haven't seen any work about a weird thought I had about what Australia was actually trying to do, and it's pretty cool (eventhough it was EPIC FAIL), but man, writing a paper about Baz Luhrmann that's not about sex and gender? That's no fun.

3. Patty and I are totally going to that 1920s thing tonight. Best part? It's near home.

Patterns that I think would work well for you...if you're wearing a plain dark jacket and slacks, try wearing a dark paisley patterned vest. The the jacket and slacks are a plain but light color, try a lightly colored checked or gingham vest. If the outer garb is a mid-range color, try a plaid vest with bigger squares and highlights that draw from the color of the rest of the suit. If your outer garb is pinstriped, however, it would probably be better to stick to a plain or very subtle, small pattern on the vest.

Patterns really are fun...the great thing about "men's" wear is that when it gets professional or formal, you don't have to deal with a ton of stylistic variation in the actual clothing pieces--frills, weird sleeves and collars/necklines, pants length, the cut of the pants, etc.--that you would if you were in the "women's" department. Mix and match becomes not only easier but more enjoyable.

1. Ooh, sounds chic!

2. Omigod, Gatsby by Baz? YESPLZ. And how awesome would it be for you to get published in a collection of scholarly essays on the man? If you go for it, good luck!

3. Have fun storming the castle!

Our new apartment is less than half a mile from where F. Scott and his Zelda are buried.

After we got all the furniture into the new place, we promptly went to have a picnic dinner adjacent to them.
