Although, the cat macros are now out to play.

Out of curiosity...

Have they provided any sort of professional CV?

From: [identity profile] xtricks.livejournal.com
Yes, they are BU grads. BU has, after a blizzard of emails, explained this project is in no way affiliated with the University.

No, it's been f'locked. Presumably Dr Ogas was fed up of the cat macros.

Pity in some ways. I wanted to look up a WHARRGARBL macro, because that's pretty much how I reacted to this fail.

The link doesn't work for me, though I think I know well enough where to go by now.

Seeing how this person only answers select questions and ignores any and all criticism, I'm beginning to think it's an elaborate troll-thing. Substtuting 'she-male' for 'transsexual' with a subsequent ridiculous disclaimer reinforces the troll-thing idea as does the reveal regarding the communication with UB. No follow up or mention of that by the OP? Fetid, I think.

From: [identity profile] 6-bleen-7.livejournal.com
I agree that the "shemale" thing just screams "troll," but I have seen actual scientists doing peer-reviewed research act this badly. It's rare, but it does happen.

Oops! The post just went down. I was going to say that the weakest link was his description of cortical pathways (in the brain), which didn't sound quote right, but it looks like I won't be able to furnish a quote.

Wow. The more I read about this dude's faking a scientific study the more unbelievable it gets. Claiming to be performing research under the aegis of an institution one is no longer affiliated with borders on criminal, not to mention being an automatic deal-breaker with regard to research funding. I would be very interested in who, if anyone, is really sponsoring that project. I suspect nobody, since clearly no IRB was consulted and none of the protocols for human-subjects research have been followed.

I've just taken a series of caps of what I had open of page 3 of the comments, attempting to make sure each full comment got into at least one frame with source info. I'd be happy to send them as an archive to anybody who wants to do anything useful with them.

Also, this has the rest of the text of that top-level post, since my display wasn't quite big enough: http://tinypic.com/r/2vads2r/3

I assume I can't usefully download page source to get something, but I'll give it a try anyway.

Has someone caught his cv on the BU website? When you hit the research tab it has an updage re: book sinage and that should be preserved to see how he's using BUs resources at least peripherlly for this project (sorry, spelling fail).

I was telling my pal L about this and we looked at Ogi's page on the BU website — her immediate response to his CV and picture was that he must be Asperger's. I think she's right. Which doesn't excuse this crazy survey and book topic but does go a ways towards explaining it ….

So wait...he's claiming to be doing this research under the auspices of BU?

Time to bypass the mo'fo and go directly to the BU Institutional Review Board. If he's legitimately doing research on human subjects (and yes, a survey counts as such), he has to get approval from his IRB -- including giving them a copy of the survey.

Date: 2009-09-02 09:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] xtricks.livejournal.com
He was implying that but no, this whole thing is for a popular book. And BU already has been contacted and disavowed any connection to the project, requested they stop using the BU resources for it.

The annoying part that I see?

I have a very good friend who is writing her PhD thesis on fan culture. She's a reading/literacy specialist and is, in essence, attempting to show how fandom is a legitimate subculture (as an affinity group) and then, from that, how to bring it into classrooms to help students learn to read. She's got IRB approval and will be conducting a survey and follow-up interviews at a con later this year.

She's NOT doing this to primarily sell a book (although if she does, it will be more of an academic sort), but to try and fill a research gap in how to reach students with learning/literacy difficulties.

And it chaps my hide that this bobohaid has now potentially made it more difficult for her because fans may be nervous she's got the same intention as he has. I've seen the survey -- I know it isn't.

From: [identity profile] malle-babbe.livejournal.com
Make that two people irritated on your friend's behalf; the goals that she has for her research are beyond admirable. My sister has a freshly minted PhD in psych, and I have half a notion of passing along this guy's sloppy-ass survey to her; after her forehead vein bulges out, she'd fall to the floor laughing.
