  • Patty and I are now registered for a trip to the airshow on my birthday. When we get there at 10am the list opens up to reserve flights in a biplane. I've never been in an open-cockpit plane and it's been longer than I even want to admit since I've been up in a small plane of any sort, but I am So Fucking Excited.

  • Yeah. So, Switzerland for a week in November. For work. I'm starting to feel more sanguine about it now that I've accepted it's far away enough that I can put it out of my mind and the various reasons I was feeling testy about the whole thing (which range from reasonably valid to batshit insane).

  • Speaking of batshit... remember the whole thing about the buttons on my greatcoat and how I changed them really hastily and sloppily on the flight out to LA? Yeah, well, I'm going to have to change them again. Because I've gotten a line on the correct buttons. So that's actually AWESOME, but a) a PitA and b) man, there is _so_ much wrong with me. Let's see if I can get this done before I'm on a fucking flight to LA again, yeah?

  • And on that note, get me the hell away from Sutlers because I _still_ want a Regency-era naval uniform and my current interest in other historical periods (look at me, trying to be delicate about my obsessions!) is not making that site a place I should be loitering on. On the other hand, they're going to have a US site soon, which will be nice -- firm numbers instead of wonky currency conversions.

  • Okay, so I was being all eh about Girl Number 9, but they are doing this whole Twitter narrative thing now, and unlike most things that try to do that, it's actually well done. So maybe I'm caring. Just a little.

  • Having gotten that Martin thing out of my system (okay, not really, but it's written, so it doesn't matter if it's still lingering in my brain) current working on list is refined to matters of immediate concern: virtual season work, lesbian werewolf story, Bristol abstract.

  • Is it wrong that this makes me want to become a better knitter?

  • Google AdSense + My LJ = Funny.

  • I wish the photos Patty & I are in from Dances of Vice would be posted already. That said, this makes my day. Be more adorable!

  • Gluten-free Cinnamon Rice Chex make most things better.

  • For the first time, some success is being reported out of an AIDS vaccine trial. [livejournal.com profile] keori got my attention with her excellently written post, because to be honest, I had a "that's nice and that's not enough" reaction to it this morning. But she really, really, brings home what the 1980s was like and reminds me of something I should not ever need to be reminded of, which is how many men I know who watched dozens of their friends and lovers die. AIDS forced me to learn about queer culture, to become an activist, to examine my gender issues, to stand up to my parents, to learn how to protest, to speak when it as unwise. Maybe one day AIDS won't force anyone to do anything other than get a shot.

    Broken link there.

Air shows are fun! Have a great time!

I don't think I've read much about the virtual season, have I simply missed stuff (you've posted about it elsewhere) or just not much has been said about it. Curious minds want to know :)

    Fixed.

There are a few Torchwood virtual season projects going around (what if S3 had been a 13-episode cracky thing like S1 & 2). The one I'm on we're not talking about that much until all the episodes are in and we go live, but it's going to be really amazing.

I'm currently reading the TW-S1 AU that are going on and I've only read the one S3 that was recced over at TW_House so... that's all very exciting.

    Looking forward to it :D

We're doing 13 full-length episodes (novel format, not script format), each has a different writer or writing team. I'm on the first and fourth episodes and on the continuity/arc teams.

I need to set Seesmic up with a "watch the Girl Number 9 stuff" filter. I'm curious and interested, but haven't had the time to do that yet. I miss Twitter. I may need to break down and buy a proper smart phone even if my acutal plan wouldn't support it well. Anything that plays well with wireless Internet.

Totally not sure what I think about the whole LJ AdSense thing other than the fact that it's probably so un-right for me on every level that it's laughable.

I'd say "you're a writer, monetize your LJ" but right now the whole thing still seems so buggy that every single add being served is for the Wall Street Journal because of "Journal" being all over every LJ page.

The one I'd monetize is my Dimlight feed, though, and zero people watch that. Probably because I don't really talk about it much. I need to build better habits.

I once came across a Globe article about someone who had smashed in another man's car window with a toilet plunger, and there was a text ad at the bottom with "toilet plunger" in the headline.

"Hello, faithful consumers! Our social networking platform has millions of users, but we can't make a profit on the damn thing, especially since our most cunning plans to monetize your eyeballs have inspired waves of righteous indignation. So here's the new deal—if you can figure out how to make us profit off of your LJ, we'll give you a piece of the action."

Oh yeah. Make your customers work so you don't have to.

We could do it in supermarkets! Coupons for fronting merchandise! Mopping! Kickbacks for self-service checkout!

(That last one would be awesome. I'd be...well, okay, I'd still be poor. But I'd have more bus fare.)

The German part. Zurich and a small town nearby.

I'm sad, for perverse reasons, that I won't be able to go to Geneva.

Ah...my city! Feel free to ping me with questions about it, if you want.

You might want to look at getting a Swiss Pass or Swiss Card before you go -- the trans and trams are the best way of getting around (and it's a lot faster and cheaper to take the train to Zurich main station than it is to take a cab, unless someone else is picking you up)

I'm very jealous. I really liked living in Zurich and wouldn't mind a chance to go back!

    Yay, Voon and other guy!

I whooped when the headline for the promising AIDS vaccine study appeared on my Google homepage. In my early teens I had nightmares in which I was HIV-positive even though I was still a virgin. (I probably I would’ve been one of those kids who dreamed about The Bomb in the sixties.)

Well we don't actually reenact. We just have balls and picnics and things. So we're not characters or what not, but we wear the clothes and do the dances and eat the food and play the card games and I once had to make a toast to Admiral Lord Nelson on appallingly little notice.

Our next thing is Oct 17/18 in New Haven -- which is an easy Metro North trip from the city. Just, you know, FYI.

But once I've built up a little cash thanks to new!job, I will definitely look into costuming for and attending such things. Because I have to say, that all sounds incredible.

One of the more photogenic humans I've ever encountered. He's in many of the shots in this set; he has one of those faces that just pops out even in the background on a crowded dance floor.
